Nothing is better than free lighting from the sun, but modern LEDs produce about 100 lumens per watt (double the CFL figure) They also last for 30,000 hours, compared to 5,000 for fluorescent.
If you ever use LEDs, be certain to obtain them from a reputable manufacturer, Although they will still be made in China, they will be manufactured to the correct specification, unlike those on the open Chinese market.

I'm not that gloomy about the future either :)

I just hope we can do it with species like endangered whales, tigers, rhinos etc. etc. and not without them and at their cost. Which seems entirely possible to me!

Have you seen the new LED sapphire filament bulbs. Some are available with a color temperature that exactly matches the traditional tungsten bulbs and the size of the bulb is the same. Although quite expensive, they last 30,000 hours (compared with 1,000) and a 1,000 lumen bulb (100 watt) consumes 8 watts.

Have not seen the LED Sapphire Bulbs yet but they sound calming. I do appreciate the lengthy life and low useage of watts. My entire home is now fitted with LEDs and the original incandescent bulbs are in a box to replace should I ever move out and want to take the bulbs with me at that time.

I too have packed the old bulbs for replacing should I move.

I've just done a complete year with LEDs and a new heating boiler, my bills electric and gas are so reduced, in amazed!

I love that I have different shades for different rooms too..
Far nicer, and cheaper in the long run.
