My ancestors come from two countries known for alcoholics, Ireland and Germany. Yet I don't drink, though I've been meaning to start.
Nonsense...no Irishman is by default an alcoholic, there are many reasons why the road to drink here is so often the most travelled. Firstly...the weather..it's shit basicly..my fellow scots(who are essentially an irish tribe who thought it would be great to go to an even rainier country..smart fellows) will know what i mean..why be outside in the bollox cold or rain when you can be inside a nice warm pub..that's sense!..not alcoholism. Secondly..and most importantly..we are sadly..as a nation...all mental, I think the thousands of years of breeding amoungst ourselves on this tiny isle has done the ol Gene pool a bit of damage..sure we had a few top ups along the way..the viking invasion's being an example but it was not enough..so in order to curb this insanity alot of irishmen seek comfort in the warm embrace of mind numbing alcohol. I realise there are alot of generalisations here but i think both points apply to alot of the supposed alcoholics we have here. So have a little pity on us!
I think weather has a lot to do with alchohol consumption. It's weird but people just seem to drink more in colder climates..
Update: I am in love with an Irish man. My boyfriend was born in Ireland, adopted and raised in the states. His accent is prominent on certain words and he'll force the rest for me when I so desire to hear it. Should we get married, he will be saying his vows entirely in the accent. When my mother heard this, she said, "Not another Irish man!"
awwww that's so cute! I love Irish accents, though there can be quite a bit of roughness in Irish people. Eh, same with Saskatchewan guys (especially if farm-raised) but they dont' come with a sexy accent
Theres a big variation in Irish accents for such a small island. Some versions are nice, and some.... not so nice.
It's interesting to hear what other people have to say. Ireland has a big drink problem which has just gotten worse over the last 10 years and we had the stereotype long before then. I agree on the climate to a certain extent, but the main problem in Ireland is that it's to socially acceptable to drink from a young age and also the way we drink is wrong. Most Europeans have a drink culture aswell but seem to understand moderation. I also agree with the statement that Irish people are mad. It's only when you travel you realise that alot of Irish people are nuts. I think this is good though, in other countries people take themselves too seriously, something which I don't think could be levelled at the majority of Irish people. http://www.irishhealth.com/?level=4&id=1677 That link hightlights the drink problem in Ireland. I'm no angel myself, I drink far to much aswell, but sure what can ya do, it's out of conditioning and boredom, or at least that's what I tell myself. As for never marrying an Irish man, it all depends on which one you get. Plenty of arseholes and plenty of sound ones.
Part of why I left the place - Dublin (capital) is a place where the pubs are JAMMERS 6 nights o da week and half JAMMERS on the 7th. Here we have skiing , better beer , and lotsa outdoors stuff. Rox I live in Munich , Germany , on border with Austria and Italy...
Throughout the last century the pub was where people socialised and met, but now you just see young people goin to nightclubs every night and getting completely thrashed. And then they want to do it all over again the next day. It's like everyone just wants to get drunk. People need to get a hobby I think.
I go to nightclubs to dance... I get a little tipsy usually, but not to get drunk. My friends all go to clubs to dance, not to get drunk.
