Since when have you become the spokesman for the Asian Community? Your views and input is respected but speak for yourself. As for no impact on the Asian community come and live in Birmingham. Here you go again singling out Whites and Asians. Just who is hoarding large quantaties of food? What planet are you on?

Again, not true in your view. You really are very self opinionated.

Can you please stop assuming things. War and terrorism is a social issue. It is a social problem. It affects people. This doesn't mean we are all paranoid or bitter and twisted. Just because everyone doesn't share your point of view doesn't mean they are automatically wrong. Just for the record I am NOT a Blunkett supporter!

Again more assumptions and more ethnic twadle - yawn. You really are a bitter person. I feel sorry for you.

    Again accusations and assumptions.

You obviously don't know many people.

Well again this is just your experience isn't it. Maybe you should lighten up a little. You really do seem to have a problem.

You keep trying to drag me in to a debate about how a poor Asian ethnic minority might be struggling against oppression and fear of National Identity Cards. Now whilst I am not Asian I have ties to the community in more ways than you could possibly know. Most Asians in the West Midlands have worked hard to get where they are and many muslims and others of ethnic background would object to your comments and rants.

This really has got you going hasn't it. Has it touched a chord somewhere? Try and be more positive about things rather than always trying to have a go at people.

Despite your tone I like you, which is more than I can say for your comments and assumptions about me. The fact is - You remind me of when I was young, hot headed and stupid like you.

The problem is, these boards are predominantly left wing. That's the nature of most hippy philosophies (such as they are). If you're going to come to forums like this with right-of-centre views (such as pro-identity card), then you've got to expect a little flack. It might also be an idea to make the effort to get to know people before you start launching into controversial discussions that end up with you hurling insults at a popular member of the forums. Not really the best way to get started, is it?

Well at least Zonk took it the right way. Isn't that what forums are for? Active debate? Far better to participate whatever your view.

Sorry if I have offended anyone

I agree mate. Bit like sex though. Usually a good idea to work up to the fireworks with some gentle foreplay. ;)

Just to return to the topic at hand before you guys have yourselves a massive love-in...

Let's look at a practical consideration away from the moral implications of such an act...

I don't really go with this infallible technology argument... using chip and pin cards is an excellent example... supposed to cut card crime, yes?... however, organised crime is an incredible creative and inventive thing... you now have a more technological breed of fraudsters who will obtain your pin number by attaching a natty little device to a cash machine... stick you card into tampered machine... type in your pin number... and said natty device records your pin number... criminals will devote incredible resources to finding ways around our so called technological protection... I have no doubt that they will be as equally creative when it comes to cracking ID cards... faked ID cards will happen... it is just a case of how long before they start to appear and how effective fakes they are...

    Fly...

My biggest fear is what information they will contain and how they will be used.

People may argue the point about us needing passports, driving licences, bank cards etc ... but all these things are still reasonably optional. We can choose not to drive, we can choose not to travel etc.

However we will need these ID cards just to live ... having no access to benefits without one isn't just about a few dole claimants ... It's also about things like our national health service, our education system etc.

I fear that as soon as the government see that they are doing nothing to prevent crime, the ID card will start to be compulsory for loads more stuff ... banking, employment rights, national insurance, housing applications, ... and then maybe eventually we'll have to have one in order to go down the shops to buy our groceries, just so they can monitor our spending habits or even see what books we're reading.

Scares the hell out of me.

Just to clarify the chip and pin bit. When they insert a hidden card reader in a bank machine it reads your electronic strip and thats it. If they have a camera ( and some of these remote cameras are small ) then they can record you entering your pin. However, due to getting a good picture on a camera and the fact someone might spot it and nick it, the most common way that they get your pin number is simply to watch over your shoulder as you enter it.

The inserting of a card reader in a hole in the wall machine alone does not record your pin. The device they use only records the magnetic strip. The chip and pin part of your card is very very hard to reproduce and pretty useless without the actual number. On the other hand standard credit cards are easily cloned and if they have your card they also have the 3 digit security number on the reverse.

Chip and Pin gets over this problem with its advanced chip and code known only to you. They would actually need to steal that particular card and know its pin number.

The most common way you lose your credit card details on non chip and pin cards are when you pay by card at a garage or let a waiter at a restaurant walk off with your card to process the payment. A card reader is smaller than your actual card and can be carried on the person or as more often hidden attached under a shelf or counter. The till operator quickly runs your card through the device and then makes the normal transaction. Most are adept at this. You won't even notice.

The details of cards collected through the day are then passed on to an expert with a computer who clones the cards by reading the digital information off the card reader. A new card is made, often on blanks with the magnetic strip, and your card is used to purchase large quantities of goods on the net. They can't withdraw cash because they don't know your pin number. However, they can spend your money on the internet.

Now, has anyone got a second hand card reader as I could do with a spare and I really need to get down to Nat West tonight with my laptop, camera and a new reader for Barclays next door.

    :)

PS: Can we get back to arguing it was a lot more fun
