uh! i don't think... even if the grateful dead and impro are a bit the same ... it's a confusion...Imagine an album by the grateful called "improvisation" ahahhahah... no really ...i know it's a black market joke:H In fact Jazzmen were into it too before all those jam 65-75 bands... & well our Tribal Neolithical fathers ...where jamin' with the dinausaurs as rythmic section
Improvisation was first done by, to my knowledge, all of the early jazz guys. I mean, improvisation has to have been around forever, but jazz is what everyone says was the first improvised music like that. The Dead just took what the jazz guys were doing and applied it to more of rocking style along with blues and country thrown in. I wouldn't really say anyone "invented" improvisation either.
It is the illuminatus or whatever symbol. It's on every dollar bill and that's all i have to say about that.
...Yes i know i was swimming in a sort of sarcastic sea of posts... But well i was not sure... my radar can be blured at night...so I landed there... but hey ... "sarcastic grateful dead"... it's a real good tittle for an album of those guys... there's a sort of "devil smile" in this tittle... mmmhhh if we came back to improv.... yes it clearly even started without us...into the deep ages maybe our cousins monkees or other insects were jamin' in other languages... We still got so much to discover bout the universal music
This order is subject to change: 1.) Grateful Dead 2.) Phish 3.) Widespread Panic 4.) Umphreys McGee 5.) SCI Mind you just because Cheese is # 5 doesn't mean I don't love the shit outta them. Can't waiut to see them at ACL fest. Oh and I'm seeing Panic when they come to Grand Prarie this summer.
You haven't heard the right shows if you don't think they are good. If you like Phish, there is no way you could not like UM. If you like any good music, there is no way you could not like UM. I used to think they sucked too cause I heard a real bunk show, but now I know that they don't. They pretty much blow everyone else out of the water as far as energy and technique in the 'jamband' arena. I have their discography and a bunch of shows.
umphrey's can jam...no denying it. i don't really like their studio stuff i've heard...but the live stuff is great.
I think the singer's voice is the weakest part of UM, I like the tone of the lead guitar and the fact that everybody in the band is sick but it still sounds good and energetic
IMO, the vocals are definatly the weakest part as 2ces said. UM can throw down incredible jams when they are on but for those out there who have seen them numerous times might realize its sorta hit or miss. At least for me thats how its been. My favorite band will always be The Grateful Dead, but as for bands that still tour, SCI takes it.
The best jam-song for me is Donovan's "Season of the witch" by Mike Bloomfield, Steve Stills and Al Cooper
phish is still my favorite. the music is uplifting and complex. and some of their lyrics are amazing. someone below said that they haven't heard of phish, i highly recommend it. get a copy of junta and enjoy! my second favorite "jam band" right now is the secret machines. their music is a little more sophisitcated and a little bit darker than phish's. its really wodnerful. they aren't as popular as phish is and you may not have heard of them but you can check them out on myspace www.myspace.com/secretmachines
