The Grateful Dead are above and beyond mere jamband status.

    Fact.

they are more than a jamband (as is Phish) but that doesn't change the fact that they are still a jamband. they are the first that holds the elements of more "modern" music. because in reality jazz is another word for jam. good jazz was all about improvisation....

^^ Absolute truth therein pretext affixed above. I'm a lindzertart...

haha anyways For me there are many, more than to clutter this thread with, but ultimately I love jamming to misfits, ramones, hendrix and beatles.

Only because I play most of the time with delay affects appending the original status...

Tho there's nothing like dancing around jerry's every hanging. Loops are fun kids!

I was born listenin' to The Grateful Dead and will always be a Deadhead, however for other bands I have always really been into that are still around today would be bands like The Disco Biscuits, Moe., Yonder Mountain String Band, The String Cheese Incident, and Psychedelic Breakfast.

I love the Grateful Dead and the Allman Bros and other popular jam bands from the past, but as of a few years ago, I got to see a concert out in Indian Springs, Nevada, about 40 miles north of where I live in Las Vegas. This concert was called the Area 51 Soundtest, and featured Tea Leaf Green, and Col. Bruce Hampton and the Codetalkers. I was blown away by both of these bands. I have recently gotten some live recordings from these bands, and I gotta say that they are my favs right now.

why? lots of bands evolve and JFJO started out as a seven-piece frat party band.
Lots of folks didn't give anyone after Sean a chance.

sez the person who still calls Jason Hamm of SCI "the new guy."

i gotta say phish by far. kinda cliche, though not so much as saying the dead. but nothing can do it for me like phish can. i used to be into the dead alot. but i kinda lost interest in them. of course listening to sugar magnolia on the grateful dead movie is nothing short of perfection. but i did make a list of bands that were mentioned a bunch of times on here so i intend to check them out.

The Grateful Dead are the fathers of the jam scene. Phish is pretty innovative as well. If its media, fans, innovation you want then there you go. But if you judge a band strictly on music and sound alone, i think the best jam acts out right now

1.) the everyone orchestra (by far the best in my opinion. total jam music at its finest)

most people just go for the popular bands (moe, umph, sts9, phish, dead) which is fine....they are popular for a reason. i just like a little more creativity involved i guess. moe in my opinion is pretty weak...ive seen them about 5 times now and never once have i left a moe show impressed. but thats just me, i have some friends who eat moe right up. Summer Camp 08 will prove that. Conspirator and Banyan both will be super dope.

All i can say is, if you ever have a chance to see The Everyone Orchestra (usually only play festivals since they have an ever revolving cast of musicians on stage....from various bands around the fest. often times up to a dozen on stage at one time.) GO DO IT.....incredible
