    unbelievable...

none of these posts even mention actual techno. you guys are mentioning trance and jungle.

techno artists = adam beyer, Jeff Mills, Kenny Larkin, Richie Hawtin, Magda, Matthew Dear, Marco Carola, Miss Kitten, the hacker, speedy j, Heiko Laux, Frankie Bones, Damon Wild, Dylan Drazen, Joey Beltram, Stewart Walker, DJ Rush, Terrence Fixmer, Carl Craig, Thomas Brinkmann, Daniel Bell....(i could go on for a couple of pages)

not to be an elitest, but there is definitely a difference in sound between techno, trance, and jungle

@polymer: Beyer vs. Liebing on KLOT43 (liveset) fucking rocks...I have real trouble finding Liebing's full albums (does he even have any?) on the 'net. :(

Frankie Bones is D'n'B, not techno...but Studio 54 (East 27 Mix) still rocks.

It's hard to define "straight techno" since the genre has literally exploded over the past few years...D'n'B, breakbeat, gabber, trance, psy-trance, dance, trip-hop, industrial, EBM...

    I recommend:
DK8 - Murder was the Bass
Infected Mushroom - Acid Killer (featuring Xerox), Bombat (original edit), Noon, or the last 20 minutes of their set on Ministry of Sound; as well as their liveset in Japan with Yahel.
    Mindcontroller - Slave
Darkraver - I Feel Like Dancing, House Qlassix, No New Style
ATB - DJ Special K Mix, Liveset vs. Paul Oakenfold...if you can find it
DJ Tiesto - Live in Innercity Amsterdam, regular OR (RAI Megamix)
...and for tripping, some Sickboy...his first liveset in Vienna, or anything from his album "Shake Hands With a Clenched Fist"...for the absolutely most stunning breaks ever.
DJ Baby Anne - Live in Miami "I'm About to Break"
DJ Keoki - Madness (DJ Dara Remix)
The Horrorist - Body to Body, Hard Step Future Force
Flatline vs. Forsaken - Still Underground
Spy vs. Spy - Real Criminal Behavior
Evol Intent vs. Corrupt Souls - Filthbath

Robot Death Squad, DJ C, DJ Toecutter, Dieselboy, DJ RuffStuff, blah blah blah.

umm, no. unless he recently got into dnb, he's always been a techno dj/producer, since the Storm raves of the early 90s, and Ghetto Technics. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frankie_Bones

    Dieselboy is d'n'b.

nonsense. techno is a definitive sound, right down to the minimal.
listen to: Dan Bell, Richie Hawtin, and Jeff Mills. that is pure minimal techno, from the 313.
    TR-909 and a bassline/synthline...that's techno.

Baby Anne?? that's breakbeat. sounds nothing like techno. you're thinking of the broad "Electronic music" class, covers all the genres.

    Infected Mushroom is psy-trance.

I've never really been a hippie (though I can appreciate good vibes), but I am an old skool rave baby fo' sho'. I know electronic music from top to bottom, and techno was my favorite type of electronic music for quite a while. my fav techno? Richie Hawtin, Speedy J, Surgeon, and Heiko Laux. definitive hard techno.

check out Radio 1 (BBC) for Liebing sets, particularly the Essential Mixes. good shtuff

Errr, we may have a "Communication Breakdown" somewhere.

Baby Anne is NOT breakbeat...she is D'n'B with break influences. She is nowhere near straight breakbeat (refer to Sickboy).

The only Frankie Bones song I've heard (which was the 27th East Mix referred to above) was a D'n'B song...so sue me.

We all know IM is psy-trance...never said it wasn't.

As for "hippie" shit...I don't listen to it. If I feel like listening to 808's and 909's pounding my ears out, I'll chill to Lliam Howell's pre-/post-Prodigy shit; which I actually find quite annoying, and also find is referred to as "gabber" techno, or, repetitive bullshit played on some angry 12-year-old's drum machine in his momma's basement. ;)

Baby Anne not breakbeats? heh, she's practically a student from the DJ Icey school of breaks.
    Prodigy is "electro-punk", big-beat.

d'n'b = dara, dieselboy, anything on Metalheadz (Lemon D, Digital, Goldie, J Majik, Hidden Agenda, Accidental Heros...etc.), Panacea, Aphrodite, Teebee, D. Kay, B. Key, Rush, Ed Solo, DJ Kane, Brockee, Dillinja, Optical

I agree on the gabber bullshit...ugh...that and happy hardcore/NRG. yuck.

Definitely NOT breakbeats...check out Sickboy Milkplus on Conspiracy...I don't hear any real breaks in Baby Anne's shit. She may clone dubplates and soundfonts like nobody's business (which there's nothing wrong with), but she is most definitely NOT breakbeat.

DJ Icey, infact, has more D'n'B influence in his music than breaks...name three or four songs either one resamples on a track and I'll consider calling them breakbeat DJ's. ;)

Sickboy - "Hellbanknote" - Morbid Monster Breaks EP

Listen to THAT and tell me Baby Anne is, indeed, breakbeat. ;)

DJ Icey "Alright", and "Big Ditch" ...breakbeat classics.

Baby Anne is from Florida, the land of the breaks and miami bass. so is Icey.

i think your idea of what dnb is, is really breaks. DNB tempo starts around 160 -180+ BPM, breaks usually hovers around 115-150 range. The beat structure is similar (both are rooted in sped up hip-hop breaks), the difference is tempo, and basslines. I used to produce both styles, and my friends spun dnb and breaks as well.

listen to Renny Pilgrem/Thursday club, and tell me that's dnb (because his music is strikingly similar to what DJ Icey produces, and what Baby Anne spins).

breaks = icey, pilgrem, ben wa, uberzone, 2 bad mice, DJ Stew, Freq Nasty, Plump DJs

@polymer: Meh, I still just don't hear it. The music just sounds like D'n'B to me. Maybe I'll just call it "electronic music" and leave it at that. :p

@jacobfredjo: Another good non-techno act...Ravi Shankar (if you like sitar music)...

    haha, it's all good.

though rolling basslines and choppy beats tend to attract more of the stoner types, and methheads (in other words, junglists); they like the dark stuff.
Atmospheric dnb is nice to trip to though... J Majik kicks ass, especially the "Slow Motion" album. very nice atmospheric drum'n'bass.
Source Direct is pretty good too.
