I had no idea this thread was still bouncing around. My daughter has been back in school for a couple of months now and other than being bored academically she is having a good time of it. She has,and has always had, many friends and interests inside and outside of school. She is distressed by the frequent violence and arrests for drug dealing etc that occur daily at her school, as well as a stabbing death at the nearby high school last month that effected many of her classmates who have siblings who knew both victim and murderer (both boys were students and had been friends,it was over a girl). Some girl she didn't know shoved her in the hall last week and called her a bitch. These things happen and I dont know that it's overprotective to wish our kids didn't have to be in the middle of them. As for the accusation that homechooled kids will all become freaks if normal is stabbing your buddy to death because the girl you dig likes him better I wonder if freaks are so terrible after all.

You are doing the right thing by letting her go to school. Life is full of risks, making her stay locked at home when she wants to go to school and have a life would be wrong. Would you also refuse to ever allow her to get into a car because sometimes people die in auto accidents?

There will be time for her to worry about academics and whatnot when she is older, you are doing the right thing by letting her go to school and enjoy her youth.

Let her live that by herself and be confident that all the values you have taught her will help in this new experience. She will be wise enough to differentiate the good and bad.
