Its really really hard for me to describe, Im more of a Hip Hop, RB. Soul blues, kind of guy I grew up on the stuff. I like Hip hop and rap, because it holds all the potential for an artist to make it diverse and unique, they way the Write a rhyme, the way the build a beat, the way the deliver the song, the attitude and story it contains, the message or the humor in its lyrics and rhythm, and the way it samples music by actually bringing in the original influences of its predescessor. Its a great tool for storytelling, DMC, Slick Rick, Eric B Rakim, Beastie Boys, Dre, Scarface, Nas, GZA many artists who can tell a story to a beat Alotta people dismiss hip hop/rap as being juvenile and pointless and crap without substance, Its a whole lot more than that, A great artist puts himself into his music and Hip Hop is 98% personal, cant write what ya dont know.
I agree with you. I have little patience for people who have limited taste in music genres, or focus overly on memorizing details. I like to infer my own meaning behind music. I don't like to be told how to feel. I don't specifically know how to define what sort of music I like. My tastes are pretty diverse, but I'm pretty picky too.
I listen to whatever gives me chills. The John Butler Trio gives me the best chills. I love their music because everysong has a meaning or a story behind it, they sing about what really matters, environmental issues, global issues, bad mouthing Johnny Howard and Bush.. I like alot of Tom Waits music. Good beat, and I grew up with alot of music by AC/DC, Dave Hole, Queen, The Pogues, Alannis Morrisette..etc
Lodui's music selection of the evening. (morning) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLtjkgAtebo Ignore boring people in home video.
Glad 'ya like it Jess. With some generes like Jazz, Hip Hop, and Techno, it's really a lot harder to sort out good music from total crap. I mean theres a lot of crap in rock too, but there seems to be a little easier to sort through. Maybe it's just the radio.
Eh, I'll toss out one more funky techno beat. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=49078704
i like the radio, cause on the radio has ciut, which is a u of t's radio and they play crazy shite i have a very eclectic taste in music, i can listen to anything, there's good music everywhere
trance is prolly my favourite sub-genre of techno...well maybe.. love drum and bass and jungle as well but yeah i love trance music
Some people have such a prejudice against hip-hop that's very sad. Anyone who can't appreciate Binary Star before they listen to it is sadly misguided.
life without music is empty... every song means smth to me (i mean every good one, the one i like) i have special associations with each one, i refer them to some period of my life... as for singers i'm really interested about their personalities and lifes just to have some background... at the same time i can be obsessed by someone's creativity and voice but dislike him as a personality (like Jim Morrison) some singers are like gods for me (Bob Marley, i often talk to him in my mind) the lyrics is a very important thing...i alw listen to words coz smtimes they describe precisely what i feel or show me a wayout... i love music... my cd-player is my best friend that's alw with me i even gave him a name
i don't look for anything in artists. i look for the sounds i like. and when i hear one, then i become curious as to who might have made it and if they've made any others like it, and THEN i want to know who they are so i can add them to my mental list of places where i might reasonably expect to hear other and future sounds i might also like. i don't live in a universe that is about personalities, much as i wish each and every awairness well and harmless happiness, but one of textures and geometries, in which it is almost invariably the most convoluted surfaces that are the most gratifying. =^^= .../\...
Strangely, lyrics are the last thing I hear in a song... As an instrumentalist of many years, my ear naturally goes first to the groove, then to the bass line and harmonies. Lyrics for some reason don't really get processed by my brain unless I make it. Maybe it's because voice was the last instrument I learned... There are three types of music appreciation for myself: The first way to appreciate an artist is to respect what has gone into the recording / performance. Since I'm a musician by trade and a multi-instrumentalist, I have a fair idea of what technical skill goes into playing what I'm hearing. Even if a certain music is not my cup of tea to listen to, I can still appreciate the work that was put into it. The second way I appreciate music is for me to forget all my training and just let the music wash over me. As someone said, 'not think about it too much'. Sometimes, a song or a piece will just strike a chord. Simpler technical forms of music come to mind here.... There's really nothing that complicated about James Brown's songs when compared to a Mahler Symphony or a work by Chick Corea, but most days, I'd rather listen to James over the other two I mentioned... It's just a feeling. The best music I think, is music that can be appreciated on BOTH of these levels. In other words, the trained musician can listen to it and appreciate the faculty of the players, but the laymen can appreciate the aesthetics.
first and foremost, the band or singer has to be against global warming, industrialization, corporatization, aids in africa, hunger and starvation, pollution if the music sounds good, that's a plus
I go for a good, pulsing dance beat for my dancing songs, but otherwise lyrics that touch something within, or trigger nostalgia of some type.
I dig the musician thing, Whichaxe, I myself being a musician (not a good one by any means) but still a musician catch myself focusing on different instruments in a song and critiquing the way they are played in me head.
Why does it matter if your "good" or not? Just have fun and communicate yo' feelings with other people. Peace and love - Kevin
