I don't believe Dylan was referring to pot here. He was referring to the government and when he says "must get stoned" I believe, metephorically speaking of course, that he is talking about the old stonings they used to have back in biblical times. Mr. Tambourine man, on the other hand, is completely about getting high.
*Marijuana, the government wants to test me when I pee!* And what about the other Marijuana song, by Country Joe I think. I like Marijuana I like Marijuana I like Marijuana I sure do like to get stoned stoned stoned!

I really dont think they ever did that song, but I could be wrong though. As far as I know, they never did it live, and they certainly did not do it in the studio.
Somebody will have to help me pinpoint it, but on Black Sabbath's "Technical Extascy" album, there's a song (the title escapes me, sorry) where Ozzy sings "IIIIIIIIII like smoking joints!" Good album, from what I remember. And, Guys?, the em a break about that marijauna/phish thing.

Yes, I guess I was being a bit shallow here... I just liked the song and the groove and hadn't really thought of the meaning yet (which is a stupid thing to not-do when listening Bob Dylan...) Mr. Tambourine Man is a great song though... I only knew it by the byrds, but I did know that their version was a cover. (I'm only 16 years old and my dad likes the byrds better than bob dylan, so I only knew the byrds' version...)
