I remember the first time seeing one of his movies as a kid. Always heard about him from my neighborhood friends who saw his movies in the theater- and when I finally saw Enter The Dragon- I was beyond amazed! He still motivates me to this day!
I watched it as a kid, but it confused me whenever they called him the China man. Years later, I found out that Bruce Lee is the one that developed the concept and storyline for this series, but was refused the role because he looked too Chinese. Imagine if he was allowed to play that role!?
Well...I wasn't really aware of it, until rather recently. There's some talk that Bruce Lee created the concept for the series, but it was "stolen" from him...and then he was passed over for the role. Somewhat speculative, but that's the story his widow tells.
Native americans looked too---native american to play--uh--native americans in 40s--50s movies. So they browned up some white folks to play them. Looked too Chinese!! Doesn't even make sense. Well, if you take into account the racism, then it makes perfect sense. Like ,who in the fuck wants to see a Chinese guy playing a Chinese guy? Hahahaha----
Well, I'm not saying that his "looking Chinese" wasn't a factor. But, from what I've read...the reason that was given was that his accent was a bit too "thick". I know...you'd think that a Chinese character *should* be acceptable with a Chinese accent, but...TV audiences can be, well...weird!
