yo RELAYER are u fucking serious??? Phish has probably one of the best chemistries out of any band ever, so please dont say they are just talented musicians but not good as a band together or watever the fuck you said. I've never seen a band feed off eachother like phish does. They used to be able to pull 20 minute tweezers out of their asses and play half hour "you enjoy myself"s like it was nothing. You really should learn about a band before u talk shit on them. And Yes, Trey could shred up some Yes songs and while im not too familiar with Don Cherry i do believe phish could play his songs as well (with the giant country horn band). RELAYER please actually listen to their music before you start hating on them, cuz trey is a sick guitar player (hopefully all you phish haters can at least admit taht), and during the hieght of phish (like early to mid 90s) Trey was doing some shit that i really havnt ever heard before or since. The thing that was so amazing about phish was all the different influences that went in to create them. They were bluegrass, funk, jazz, rock, and so many other genres all rolled into one. Those four guys created something so special with the best fans and one of the best concert scenes ever (until all the god dam dmb loving collar popping frat boys started coming.), and for you to come in here and just say the shit you guys say is bullshit. Its really a shame to see all the phish haters who say they are not good but then dont really back there statements up. Sure phish had some low points but so do all bands (See Bob Dylan's albums from the late 80s and early 90s). And I mean, sure, you can find songs that phish prrobably couldnt play (not a whole lot as they have showed by covering whole albums at some of their shows). They have covered a beatles album, a who album, a velvet underground album, a talkingheads album, and a pink floyd album. Theyre musical range is really astounding, while they are not my all time favorite band, they are pretty close to it. And for you to say that they suck is ignorant, you may not like them but appreciate what they do or did, cause you wont see anything like it for a long fucking time, and that my friends is gods honest truth. So please RELAYER and any other person that says Phish sucks, i would love to continue this argument with you guys, cuz you have pissed me off for the last fucking time. And dont say that im an ass who cant accept other ppls oppinions cuz i have alot of friends who do not like phish, but realize or appreciate what they do or have done.

What the fuck is up with you people? Most of the bands you are saying that are overated aren't overated they're just not your type of music, Zeppelin, The Doors (and Jim Morrison you mother fucker that dissed him),Phish, Mettalica, Pink Floyd etc. are all great bands. Metallica's not really to my fancy , but I know enough to realize that they are good musicians. All of these bands I've listed are all very talented and are good at what they do. They were innovative and knew how to read, write, and actually make music unlike most of the bullshitters today. What pissed me off the most is the mother fucker who said the Doors and Floyd were overated and then went out of the way to say Jim Morrison was too? Are you fucking stupid dude? How much Doors have you actually heard Even if you have heard alot did bother to try and figure out the deep meaning, symbolism, and other figurative language and meaning put into Jim Morrison's lyrics?...Or the correlation between the keyboards and guitars, the nuances of Densemore's drumming? All of this is very precisely planned out music you moron. They're great musicians like most of these other bands are. They're not overated they're just not ur taste. No revolutionary, innovative band with talent and musicianship is overated, they're just not to everyone's appeal.

Man, some of you guys just need to chill out. Thinking that a group is overrated doesn't necessarily mean that "they suck".
I strongly disagree with the post made that all post-Syd Pink Floyd is mediocre (just the stuff after 1975 ;)), but you won't see me bitching and whining about it and trying to "persuade" people to think otherwise. If you're going to react so strongly to criticism of your favorite band that it somehow equates to a personal attack against you, maybe you shouldn't participate in forum discussions like these. If it's "pissed you off for the last fucking time" or whatever, then just leave-- it's as simple as that.
I tend to agree with those who said that Floyd, Zeppelin, the Doors, etc. are overrated; however, I still enjoy their music and have an appreciation for their contribution to popular music as a whole. The music media just has this nasty habit of putting certain groups or performers (especially those who have died prematurely) on pedestals of greatness; in some cases the degree of lionization is perceived, rightly or wrongly, as being more than what was deserved based on the group's output and musical influence.
With all that said, in my book the Rolling Stones are the most overrated band on planet Earth; I like some of their songs, but by no means would I think they push any kind of musical boundaries or were deserving of the "rock god" status they've been accorded... So if you think that I've somehow made a dehumanizing attack on your character, please flame me at your earliest convenience; I can't wait to be called any number of stupid names just because I disagree with you!

Phish is overrated, but I like their music, I'm just saying there's too much hype with that band.

Well of course socieyt puts individuals on a pedestal after they die.. That's the way it's always been. That's the way it was for Da Vinci, Mozart, Socrates, etc. It's just a way to commemorate the eternelness of theirselves and their contribution.

True, but it's a flawed practice. Mozart died a nameless pauper, and there weren't trumpets announcing his musical godhood an hour after his heart stopped beating; it's taken 200+ years for his pedestal to reach the height it's at. For a pop music icon to be lauded posthumously as "one of the greatest ______ who ever lived" and be meekly accepted as such-- without really allowing the passage of time and taste to test that-- is absurd.

I agree that they're a bit overrated, but you're not being entirely fair; keep in mind that he was "kicked out" because he was so dosed/spaced out all the time at gigs that he wouldn't/couldn't even play the tunes he helped write... If Pink Floyd is overrated, I would say that Syd Barrett is even more overrated.

There is no such thing as an "over-rated band." Music is music; no band sounds exactly the same. Creating music is an art; anybody who can figure out the parts and lyrics deserves appreciation because the majority of their audience probably doesn't even know how to sing right.

okay, at the risk of pissing people off, I have to say the most overrated i have seen in recent years has to be Les Claypool.

dont get me wrong, Ive seen his work for years, and have listened to it often. BUT...the guy has two riffs, and only uses one. I didnt mind the freaky bass sound the first five albums I heard of it, but I had hoped it might lead to something other than that.
Hardly the complete player, I have heard way too much about Les' talents with every throw together band he can shove onstage. Not that he isnt creative, but there is only so much slap-pop style I can hear. Everyone gets wood when he puts out another CD, and I just roll my eyes when I hear him playing the same riffs he used to open for Rush ten years ago.

Sure, I may be the lone ranger in thinkin this, but its my opinion. If you disagree, find yourself a brick wall to complain to, cause I wont listen to anyone else tell me that this guy is anything but a one trick pony.

I posted Elvis on a most overrated list long ago, maybe this one, or one for overrated musicians, though Elvis was not much of a musician, imho. He didn't play any instruments worth a darn, didn't write songs, and his recordings were quite one dimensional. He didn't seem to like too many different genres.
Jerry Lee Lewis, Bill Haley, and I'm sure I could find others, beat him to the punch re: white guys who loved black music, and brought it to the white listeners who wouldn't listen to it when it was played by blacks.
I kinda like Sinatra, and the 70's bands you list did have some solid songs, ie:
Lorelei, Lovin Touchin Squeezin, Urgent, imho.

    Most overrated band............CCR
