The reason for the material success is the familial devotion they have to each other. The reason it looks like government is that it is a form of governance and a very powerful one in that there is not much dissension. Mormonism in practice is a covert theocracy and the ten percent is a reliable tax base. I say covert only as they allow the appearance of being "American". If forced to choose between US government and the Mormon theocracy, it is Mormonism.

I was always under the impression that Mormans were pretty anti-establishment. Granted, they are a huge establishment unto themselves but because of that i thought they didn't pay a lot of heed to other establishments trying to govern them.

that was such a fascinating book

Ahh-you read it too. What I'm trying to do ,is wrap my mind around why millions of people become adherants to organizations=mormon, catholic, televangelists, ect, when information about them is available and quite explicit concerning the foibles of said organizations. If you want to call having sex with children foibles. If you want to call the dispersal of young women to old men foibles. If you want to call molesting alter boys and others foibles. If you want to call cheating people out of their money foibles. I can only guess that people have a real need to be led by strong personalities, whether they be charlatans or earnest believers. I just don't get why people would voluntarily give up seeking answers to this mystery that is life and follow those that say they have "the answer".Of course, the children have no choice until, like some here have mentioned, they get old enough to think for themselves and set off on their own journeys to find meaning.

One of the best books I've read in the last few years, scratcho.

I find it amusing that Mormonism is a religion that can actually be proven to be false. I'm referring to the belief that the American Indians are one of the lost tribes of Israel. DNA proves this crazy idea is false. I could never vote for a Mormon. Their religion is just crazy. Nice people, tho.

It's certainly all interesting. I read all Floes put up and it seems like they could have been twisted out of their gourds. Right SL--they don't bother me and I don't bother them. To each his/her own.
