How sweet of you. You have a way with words. I think the people that have the capacity should tune out, drop out and try and experiment with their lives a little, exploit the freedom that our society offers to the unburdened and do something interesting with their lives, ideally remaining focused on making changes to society. I'm slowly getting to a point where this is remotely possible, in a few decades ...as for people burdened with children, illness and bad credit, take pills, take drugs, whatever gets you through the night. My mother is infinitely more aware and empowered on Xanax than when she was without, I say good on her.
...even sticking only to psychiatric drugs, that takes a lot away from people who are legitimately suffering from severe depression where other cognitive treatments aren't working. I'd be hard pressed to tell a schizophrenic the anti-psychotics that control the voices are unnecessary. But different strokes, I suppose.
ya know. a lot of it is probably bullshit. and there's always someone wanting to make a buck out of the stupid masses. people want to believe that there is a quick fix to every problem. no one is forcing anyone to take medications. im so over all the complaining. they wouldn't be making such a huge business out of it if there weren't millions of idiots buying into it all.
here is the way I see it - from dealing with my depression and reading shit in psychology when someone is depressed, anxious, facing an issue, etc.. there are three "levels" Obstructed stage... wallowing in your misery, negative thoughts, not feeling "right", guilt, depression, nervous energy/not enough energy to get things done Reshaping stage... trying to overcome your issue, working out, eating healthy, meditating, keeping a journal, using your negative energy in a positive way, trying to "get better" Essential stage... finally feeling good, calm, positive energy, having the ability to see the "big picture" -- (for example, your issues/whatever was making you depressed isn't as important as you once thought it was), having a good sense of who are you now see-- the problem is, the "reshaping stage" is hard. it's hard to push yourself to work out, or get yourself to think positively, when you feel like complete shit. this time period takes EFFORT, which a lot of people don't want to put out. so when someone goes to see a psycologist, and complains they feel "sad" or "anxious".. instead of having that person practice a healthy lifestyle that will eventually lead him or her to their "essential stage", they just prescribe them with a pill that will make them "feel good" it's a really fucked up system. I think a doctor should recommend NATURAL ways to feel better -- provide comfort and support and even give this person who feels "low" a wake up call - like "hey you only get one life, one body, one chance, work on making yourself feel good" main problem is -- poor psychologists, greedy pharmaceutical companies, etc
I hate to say it, but over-medicating people seems a bit better than it used to be. Psychology and psychiatry hasn't ever been known for its intelligent approach to things. http://www.maxraven.com/novel/chapters/index1.html That's a link to a whole book written by an ex-psychiatric patient. If you can get past the grammar and a few spelling mistakes, it's amazing.
What?! How so? The use of psychiatric medicine has steadily and sharply increased the last few decades.
They're still doping everyone up. But my point was that at least they're doing that instead of abusing psychiatric patients like it used to be.
i would love to shock some people into oblivion in the name of science and getting rid of some mental illness fucking badass *zap*
My friends that have been psychiatric patients would thoroughly disagree with your idea that they 'were'. Forcing people to take psychiatrics when they may or may not need them, and more importantly, do not want them and are not a harm to themselves or more importantly to others; is just evil.
please tell me its not a true story. Ive only read the first chapter and half of the second, but the bit about the eyeball....
Dave what u say is a lot of sense. People forget nutrition , exercise , fun , social interaction as key constituents in being happy. I've seen people become a parody of their former selves thro over-medication. Life is talked about as just "all luck" instead of something that should be managed. And unfettered drug companies can often be harmful to medicine.
