you mean mustain only helped in the first album. I really like megadeth but I just hate it when ppl bash hammet or attribute metallica's success to the one year in which mustain was part of the band.

remember that most of metllica's greatest songs were written in absence of mustain. He maybe a greate rythym guitarist, very catchy and originall riffs but as to lead hammet kicks mustain's ass IMO.

    back on topic:
I would put them in the following order.
    Metallica, Megadeth, pantera, slayer.

I'll assume that you own Kill and Ride, check the credits for the following songs...

    Hit the lights
    The Four Horsemen
    Jump In The Fire
    Phantom Lord
    Metal Militia
    Ride The Lightning
    The Call of Ktulu

You really need to think over what you're talking about. Mustaine's time in the band contributed to these songs, and if you take these away 'tallica's certainly lost some impact.

Hammett plays the same solo over and over again. wah-wah.

Also, dave played lead in metallica, and plays many leads in megadeth. I'm sure you realize that deth's songs are much more complicated

Is it important that songs are complicated?

When the question is which guitarist is more skilled, the complexity of their solos is most definitely of importance.

I don't care about instrumental prowess. I don't recognise bad instrumentalists anyway.
The songs just have to appeal to me, and that doesn't take complexity or wow omg dazzling virtuoso riffs or drum fills or whatever.

I'm sure this counts for a lot of people...

Same hear, skill isn't only defined by the complexity of the songs.

Hammett writes some of the most memorable solos I have ever heard, and they're incredibly fitting for the songs. In terms of pure playing ability, if you were to standing him up against someone like Micheal Romeo, he'd be blown away before he even gets a chance.

Sure, Kirk is good, but to say he's better than Mustaine is laughable. If you play guitar, you know who's the better player, whether you like what they're playing is no more than personal taste. Personally, I tire of the same wah-wah solo popping up in every single song since he stopped covering Mustaine's work.

Mustaine is an amazing guitarist. Theres really no question about it. Kirk is very good too but i agree that wah wah in every solo has to stop. I know he can do better then that. But what about jeff hennamen from slayer? I know most of you think kerry king when you hear slayer but i think jeff is exceptionaly better then kerry. So what about that guy?

Hanneman is quite a riff'er but slayer solos since the "Show No Mercy" days haven't been much, compared to the others in this poll.

Kerry has never been much more than average though...

assuming they are all at their best:
    Metallica
    Slayer
    Megadeth
    Pantera

but Iron Maiden is better than all of them
and if Megadeth is being included, Iron Maiden sure can be =D

Are you kidding me? Maiden better than Megadeth? HAH.

As good as they are, they're not Metallica, Slayer, Pantera or Megadeth.

Speaking of maiden... They've got three guitars, yet the bass is heard above all else, followed by a tinny guitar sound. How exactly do they manage to pull that off?
