Well, I'm glad there is a thread like this because when I said to my parents 'Can I have dreads?' The first word was......guess what, NO! I soon convinced them to let me have dreads after much arguing and visits to dreadhead HQ. After that, they were the best thing since sliced bread........

I think there is a age divide with dreads, all my friends at school were 100% for it, But some older people in my family were against it.

Thing is, People of all ages look at guy/girl dreads and think "wow, they look cool". But the divide is shown when they hear that their son/daugter whats to get dreads....

I have wanted dreads since i don't even remember, i never felt though it was the right time in my life. I finally came to a point of knowing i was ready to undertake this journey and i hit a brick wall....i would appreciate any help.

I've been at my job for a little over 3 months, started June 19th, 06....before i started i asked a close family friend (the one who reccomended i apply and a supervisor at the company) if i could have dreads under the company's policy/dresscode. SHe told me that there have been employees in the past that had them and as far as she knew they were allowed, but recommended that i wait long enough to recieve my insurance and benefits and prove myself as a good emplyee. Doing just that when i finally came the point where i knew i was ready....found out they are against the dress code.

    In the employee hand book:
"Shaggy, unkempt hair is not permissible; un-natural hair colors (i.e. blue, green) are not permissible."
"Caps, hats or head-wraps of any kind are not permissable unless part of required professional uniform" [IMG]

That is all that is in there that I can see that would have any relevance towards dreads, I suppose?

My question is should I try and fight for the ability to do it, or should I take it as a sign and wait till a later time.

In writing this all out I feel like I know what I should do but I would appreciated any advice any of you have...

I know I'm repeating myself, but could you try to pass this as a religious thing?

If you want to dreadlocks so much... Why dont you just get it backcombed? Then you can maintain it with your hands, and crocheting needle (its so nifty, that little needle)...

But someone with more experience with the backcombing and maintaining can help you. Thats of coruse the middle part of the "trip" you cant show...

Supposedly they require written proof of being a practicing rasta @ least 6 months prior to the date of hire?

that should be able to be fought since 1 practicingt rasta.. this means what exactly? you can be catholic for instance & follow some beliefs but not concider yourself practicing if your not in church every sunday
if you call yourself a rasta then thats all they need, additionaly rastas are not the only ones who grow theyre dreads for religios, or spiritual reasons, & your reasons can be motre spiritualy personal to your beliefs & not nescxacarily to the beiefs of any group
additionaly, the 6 month written things rediculouse as well, since your free to change your beliefsat any time, & if your beliefs are personal to you who but yourself can write this letter?

Yeah, that's a load of BS. "Freedom of Religion" does not mean that you are only free to practice your beliefs if they fall within a widely recognizable religious affiliation. Maybe you should write a credo (literal meaning= "statement of belief") touching on the spiritual/religious aspects of dreadlocks as they would play into your life, and give that to them.
What kind of job is this, anyway?

What a load of crap! Just my opinion, but I wouldn't want to work in a place that doesn't allow me to be myself.

Figured some things out this afternoon. The Family friend who refered me, also my mom's best friend....also the one who fed me the line of bull about the rasta 6 months blah blah... SO i guess my mom is opposed to the whole thing. spoke with my immediate supervisor (an extremly conservative christian woman) and she told me quote" Fuck the company it's your hair, I've been here for 18 years and I've never heard anything (in refrence to the rasta thing) like that...and even if it is true it's your hair!" things have worked out for the best. Posting this made m work up the courage to confront my boss, and she totally supports me.

I have three sisters and all of us are considered less than "normal" so when I got dreads my dad was just like that one has never been the office type hope she writes a best seller. hehe. be cause he kind of reminds me that i'm graduating from college soon and need to get a job (which has been hard)
My daughters 8 and 5 want dreads now, and I told them its fine with me but they have to grow their hair out to start (they just cut it all of a couple of months ago.) my husband just shakes his head and smiles.

Hey everyone, just wanted to give you and update. Started the dreads last weekend...backcombed a little didn't favor that too much. mostly just mussed up and tangled my hair. My boyfriend and I started and worked on pretty much all of them by hand, and now they beautiful in all their fuzzy glory.

First day back at work and everyone was totally into them and really excited for me that I got to begin this journey that I have been waiting my whole life to undertake...

Thank you everyone for all you support and comments, oH I'll try and maybe put up some pictures but 1 I don;t have a camera and 2 I have no idea how to post pictures...haha.

    Much love to you all.

I'll make you feel better by asking this:
I once heard (years & years ago) that Bob Marley had around 11 different insects & 1 bird living in his dreads =D. True? false? .... I mean the insects sounds pretty realistic but the bird seems to far out for me ^^. This is probably neither a myth nor legend but have a laugh at it anyway .. =)

Yeah .. Just as I suspected :). Can't really say I know much about dreads then =/ .. thinkin of gettin em done when my hair is long enough and maybe then I can come up with my own myths that would be slightly more relevant that the former one =P.

Hope I made you feel better at least [IMG]
