Exactly!!! I hate it when people say "if this happened you'd do this". No, this this happened you'd do this. You don't know me apart form a few posts on a forum. How can you tell what I'd do?
I think you missed the point ... trees and leaves are far more abundant than meat ever will be, and it's rather easy (albeit bitter-tasting) to live off of leaves and grasses. Still, it's a more moral option than meat.
Good call... Im sure if you could live off of tree leaves and grass roots in a third world country... then thousands of people wouldnt be dying every day. Its difficult to put a situation like this in perspective when all you have seen are starving kids on television. Visiting a third world country was the most life altering incident to date in my life. Its frustrating talking to people in day to day life about the experience because they are not so much apathetic... but more unaware. And it hurts because i would have said the exact same thing before going. Probobly the largest cause of disparity is unawareness. People care, but they dont know. What it comes down to is that it would be unjustified for me to not accept another's decision of self-ethics over pleasing another person.... but to me it is more than pleasing them, and i would probobly be able to make any sacrifice for some of the people I met while travelling.
Well, not to get into an argument with you, friend, but ... there are plenty of animals that eat leaves and grass to survive. In fact, quite a few do. It's certainly not the HEALTHIEST option, but it's possible. I personally have filled up my stomach from eating maple leaves, and it tasted like total dog crap, but I did it to prove to my friend that you can at least stay alive by eating them, since they're mostly just sugar stored up in plant cells. And, I bet thousands starve because they don't even think to eat grass and leaves.
or there's such a drought that there's no leaves and grass that are non-poisonous to eat. still, if the option is letting your child starve or eat a little meat, i'd bet there'd be some here ready to rip out an animal's throat with their own teeth. being too rigid never did anyone any good.
Well I suppose a drought you can't do anything about. Even so, I'd explore EVERY alternative before I'd resort to eating my fellow sentient kinfolk. Just the concept seems even more farfetched than incest, to me.
i must confess that i don't at all understand your viewpoint there. it's not like animals aren't food to something. i'd eat people if i had to. the way i figure it, if it's digestible, it's a valid food source in an emergency. now, what decision you make when you have options vs. what decision you make when you don't are completely different things.
I guess I can't really say much because I've never been in that situation, but at the moment, with what I know ...which may not be much (haha) I just couldn't do it. The thing is, I'd LOVE to visit other countries and such, but I really don't see myself completely submerging myself in a culture where food would be a problem. What's sad is, I DO have that choice...and some people don't.
never consider your fortune in this life to be sad. because everyone gets their turn. and when your life is going good, you have more time, money and opportunity to make it good for someone else.
By the way, these are, at this moment HYPOTHETICAL situations, for me anyway, so what's the point in arguing over it. Not to mention, I know myself well enough to know what I would avoid and wouldn't avoid under ANY circumstances. A person who is starving because they have no choice is one story, a person who is starving because it IS their choice is another.
I didn't mean it was sad, I meant that it's sad that some people do not have that choice to get themselves out of a place where they can't even find food, or have money for food, to survive. When I get a bit older, after I get my degree and such, I do hope to have the pleasure of helping those less fortunate...
Hikaru - "And, I bet thousands starve because they don't even think to eat grass and leaves." I dont want an argument either... but thats a horrible thing to say. Put yourself in their shoes man.... just because they are poor does not mean they are stupid. ....Its hard for anyone who has never been in that situation to grasp the concept.
How did we go from "would you eat meat on holidays?" - a voluntary action, to "would you die of starvation or eat meat?" - something over which we have little control?
lol, totally Kiz... let's get back on topic, aye? On holidays: No, I wouldn't eat meat, or travelling for vacation reasons. I would LOVE to visit Japan to try some of their food... Lots of vegan options, and I'm addicted to rice. Not to mention Tokyo has always been a huge interest of mine. I would totally be down to stay in a capsule hotel; They look cozy!!!
sorry, it's just that the statement a&o made about not even seeing meat as a food source at all, ever, sorta begged the question. truly, it's just not essential to eat meat while travelling, since most of the time i'm travelling i'm not really eager to eat meat either, you never know how it's been treated and raised. and so much of international food is very hearty and very vegetarian.
i wasn't jumping on ya, i was just trying to give you another perspective to brighten your day. sometimes it doesnt' come out right.
LOL, oh dont worry, I didnt take any offense to it, I just thought maybe you misunderstood what I said.... well thanks for the brightening!
I just got back from a trip to japan about a month ago... its not as vegan as youd think I really didnt enjoy japan at all come to think of it... i chose it over new zealand.... and i was fairly disapointed. The only thing about it there that really astounded me was how nice everybody was to each other.... we were on the subway going home one night... and some guy was puking all over the train and he was completely sloshed... and a stranger went up to him a took his own jacked and mopped it all up, gave him a bag... and was like rubbing his back and stuff. The stranger was a middle aged ladyda type looking guy in a buisiness suit.. (he looked pretty important) and he didnt hesitate to kneel behind the guy and comfort him. He missed his stop and was still with the guy 20 minutes later when we got off the train. i was inspiredhaha
