I am not looking down on anyone. Just because I never worked doesnt mean I'm a spoiled brat. If I had to work, I would have...And its not like I am in med school by accident. I worked hard for it. And I care about formal education, even though it isnt what it used to be.
so you graduated early, or are you premed? and any number of people bust their asses but just don't have the smarts to make it. just because someone is in a lower level of finances doesn't mean they're lazy. it could very much be that they had no platform to stand on, no one to lend them a hand or encourage them, no proper training, no money in the family to keep them from having to go out and get whatever job they can, and maybe no talent in that area. but you say you're not looking down on anyone, but read through the things you've said here. i was fortunate in my education, i was fortunate in my connections, but i'm not likely to forget that my older brother had to give up his schooling and his training in order to get a job to help my mother support us. when you see a guy working at a place like mcdonalds, or some hardware store, or doing odd jobs, try to remember they're WORKING THEIR OWN WAY THROUGH. that's something to be incredibly proud of.
Neither...I dont even know whats a premed. I suppose its not the same system here... So med school is six years. Then you're just a regular doctor. Then residence - 1 or 2 years, after which you take state exam and get your license to work. Then you can specialize in something or work on your phd and stuff. And yeah, maybe I did sound a bit snobby but I honestly cant help it.
sure you can help it. just remember they're people usually doing the best they can to get through their lives with some degree of happiness and security. their jobs are shitty enough without having to deal with people looking down their noses at them. it's not wonder they look so miserable, right? do you think they grew up dreaming of working some shit job where people act flipping superior to them all the time?
I am sure noone dreamed of working at McDonalds. And not everyone can go to college...And thats the point of college - selection. I try not to look down on anybody, but a crappy job usually means lack of ambition and competence.
lacking competence is not something to look down on someone for. some people just aren't smart. why rag on them for it?
we're getting so off topic here. and I dont know why am I even posting here, I am not from UK. anyway, I'll try to be less snobby. okay ? although....as I told you, I scartch and bite Hard.
I'd disagree with you there. It could mean a lot of things. Maybe the person is working multiple jobs, I knew several people in the past who were office types during the day, but at night and on weekends had to get a Mcjob to get by or to help their families as they didn't earn quite enough in their office job to make ends meet. It could be someone who is ambitious, but might have had serious setbacks in life, such as illness or whatever that has left them unqualified for some jobs and just needs work experience to keep getting on with it. I agree with KC your posts seem really snobbish and elitest to me. I don't necessarily think McDonalds should be able to hand out degrees, but I do see the point of having places of employment like them about. Just because someone doesn't have a college education doesn't mean they are not ambitious and doesn't mean that they lack competence. There could be a whole host of reasons, including but not limited to lack of financial support that would mean someone doesn't have the luxury of having a higher education of some sort. Honestly, with the sort of attitude you seem to have for people that don't have the education you have, I certainly hope I'd never be one of your patients, because to me it seems like you look at the rest of us as being 'beneath' you. And the last thing I would want in a doctor is to be demeaned or treated as if I'm an idiot simply because I don't have letters after my name.
this forum isn't limited to the UK only it is just a good place for all of us that live in the UK to talk and mingle. I'm not a native myself, as I'm originally from the States. Also, some of the best conversations we have in this forum are off topic ones.
you know, you didn't even read what i said about that. people might not be able to go to a major college, but in the usa, our community colleges are increasingly becoming a viable option for many. and YET, i had to drop out so that i could work my three jobs and live in some peace. we can't all live off mom and dad.
I did read it. And everything I said, I said from my own personal experience.I know some people who didnt have much possibilities. Some of them made their peace with it and got a job at McDonalds , some worked really hard, got into college and so on. I know its hard if you dont have the money, but there is a way for everything. I was raised to care about formal education. My parents want me to become someone and they make sure I have everything they didnt have. And I am not some spoiled snobby brat...My parents arent even that rich. And its not like I went through life carefree.
Trust me, most doctors think like this. Do you think doctors are doctors cause they like people and wanna save lives ?
"not even that rich." yeah. had you said "my parents are laborers, we aren't rich" instead of "that rich" i would have believed you. tell it to the kid growing up in hell with two alcoholic parents and a deadbeat dad. yeah, they always tell you how much you need to go to college, but damned if they make it a possiblity. don't ever look down your nose at other people, you're not worthy. no one is.
