Men are terribly restrained, emotionally and behaviorally. Many of us are fucking crippled by societal expections. This is a problem. But men still manage to be in charge of society... As long as men are the boss, females need emphasis. It's true feminism has focused on what's outside, which is where females need a leg up. It hasn't focused on what's inside, so it's not the reason men are oppressed for what's inside. Men absolutely need that kind of liberation.

That's not what I think. It's obviously not what you think. I know tons of people who don't think that. Therefor, it's not really such a common thought, is it? Doesn't the fact that you think it probably say more about you than about men and women?

Those people are sexist against men. It doesn't mean believing in "feminism: equality of the sexes" isn't right. It fits perfectly with the stated definition.

Your perception is that. My perception is not that. I suspect you don't really know a lot of feminists. Or don't know that people you know are feminist, more likely.

Females have always been sexually desired by most men, it's hardly a new development. Despite this, females were slaves for 99% of human history, and in some places still are today. Their bodies being wanted has not historically worked all that well for them as a whole. WTF?

Men don't manage to be in charge - men are the ones who are more likely to take positions that are in charge.
And that is exactly my point. Females have been liberated. The former, outside expectations of them are eradicated, and politically incorrect. But for men, feminism has only made those expectations exponentially worse.
It's made women the victim - and therefore, men the enemy.
Do you know what common thought is?

Did you not see the word historically?
No one either of us know, has anything to do with that.

It doesn't matter what you say, I am not responding. It feels that you are simply arguing your position at any cost, without even considering what I am saying - which is a complete waste of both of our time.
This does not apply to other in this thread.

Have you ever really attempted to understand the way words are used? You talk about etymology (and the whole thing with 'terrific' is pretty suspect, but I'm not going to look it up right now), but you don't seem to grasp the way '-isms' work. If you are a humanist, it means you put a lot of emphasis on the importance of humans. If you are an environmentalist, if means you put a lot of emphases on the environment. Same with racism, etc. So if you are a feminist, it means you put a lot of emphasis on the female, which doesn't seem to be in line with gender equality.

Also, 'homophobia' is a fucking stupid word, precisely because it is etymologically incorrect.

Yeah, that did come out sounding like I thought gay guys would be more objective, which can be so not the case

There are many websites and organizations of men supporting feminism.

This is a great one... http://www.nomas.org/

You go, girl. :p Come on, I opened with a statement about the need for mens' lib. I hear what you're saying, I just think that womens' lib is not the cause of the emotional stifling and burden of responsibility that's put on men. Those things are as old as the subjigation of women. The sixties brought movements of feminism hand in hand with women entering the workplace and the rise of the sensitive man. I don't know how you could have it this wrong. Feminism made men the villain? Jesus Christ, millenia of women being the property of men made men the fucking villain!

Men may be more likely to take charge in part because of the responsibility of maleness. But if women weren't still being raised to defer to men, that would not be the case. If feminism worked, it would free men, too. Feminism is not finished doing its job until women are somewhat more than 17% of the Congress, make equal pay to do the same job as men, and somewhat less than one in three of them will be raped. Considering the rape statisitic, it's quite extraordinary that you say that women have all the power because they're desired.

I would support feminism and homophobia being called something else. This doesn't mean I willfully reject the idea of either because I don't like the word people use. It's fine to ask "what do you mean by feminism?" before you answer whether you support it or not, but when someone says "I mean the equality of the sexes", it's not okay to say "No, that's not what it means, so I don't support it". Then the question is do you support the idea, never mind what it's called. Jeez.

But when there's a huge male/female power imbalance, don't you see that if women are down, emphasizing women for a time is what would bring the balance? Once the balance is there, you'd have to call it something else. Humanism isn't it, that means a different thing already.

That's exactly my point: I said I agree with that definition of feminism, but I dislike the term. I also said the same thing about humanism being a poor alternative. The point I'm trying to make is that feminism is a term which is defined differently by different people, and I think the term definitely lends itself to the 'women are superior' group, rather than the 'everyone is equal' group.

I just have yet to know anyone who identifies as a feminist that thinks women are superior.

My first foray into these forums was the thread on the "That's so gay" offensive? poll. I got completely pummelled for saying that "gay" means homosexual, so yes, it's offensive to call someone homosexual as an insult. I wish people who cared about etymology were so vocal when I needed them. :)

I agree with you and I'm surprised you were pummelled. Shouldn't be, I suppose. Gay, lame, retarded. Why are these insults?

I have yet to meet anyone who identifies as a feminist and openly states that women are superior (except online). There are a lot who obviously believe it, but refuse to identify it for what it is.

If you ever need an etymological wingman, I'm your guy :)

Believing women are human beings isn't being a feminist. It's being a normal human being.

I'm a male lesbian, so I guess that sort of qualifies me as a feminist. ;)

That was a line Frank Skinner hit Eddie Izzard with one time on his show when he espoused 'I'm a lesbian trapped in a man's body'.

He was left totally speechless, Skinner certainly had him ripped a new ass that night LOL a classic TV moment, if you excuse the pun.
