I should of elaborated on the extrapolation thing.

I think extrapolations are a good way to benchmark our society's outlook into the future, but aren't very good in real life predictions. Many people don't get this. Because as we approach higher levels of scarcity we will adapt so we never reach the "self-destruct" date. People aren't stupid enough to keep up unsustainable practices till the last drop of water/oil, but they will assuredly get close enough to feel the panic.

So when people say "All our giant monofarms will shut down and everyone will starve because we won't be able to sow/harvest!!!" That's simply not true, because as the pressure sets in we're going to use that land in a much better fashion. You would be surprised how many people dont' get this concept.

You remember when gas was almost $5-6 a gallon? People complained all day but nobody did a damn thing. But when gas hits $7-8 a gallon people will start makin change.

That's the way urban agriculture is. There's a definate movement towards organic growing, local, co-ops, homesteading, and sustainable living. Those who are smart and ahead of the curve are already on the bandwagon. But most people haven't felt the pressure enough to really make a change. But when the pressure is knocking people WILL change.

I still have to disagree. History does not reflect this and judging by the apathy and sense of powerlessness in a majority of people in the world, I cannot see it changing even in light of pressure. The main reason is in the next paragraph.

There is also a time limit with all these environmental issues that must be taken into account. Ie. Cod stocks in Canada were overused in previous years. There was a collapse of these Cod stocks and now about 15-10 years later, annual catches are only 25% what they used to be, with absolutely no sings of replenishing stocks. This limit, however, is under the constant pressure of the economy, peoples jobs depend on the consumption of these resources and once they go below a certain level they can only be restored through zero - 10 % of their original use. That is something important I have learn in my four years as an environmental studies major. PLEASE remember this an but an example of the type of qualities that resources reflect and it must be taken into account. Again, factor into account current projections of a largely necessary resource, such as water and the reality that there is a similar limit to its use before it collapses. Then factor into that the fact that water consumption will never GO down, it will stay constant AND in fact, due to rises in population, with its consumption will actually go up.

We are in the year 2009, on the brink of 10 years into a millennium. Nothing substantial has been accomplished in regards to global warming. We have to bring CO2 to levels below 1970's, this is just simply impossible, only when you consider one fundamental reality; the people with the largest influence and most effective mechanisms to achieve influence on the public's opinion, are pro-scarcity and resource consumption and the fact that we have a limited time frame to accomplish such a task.

Also there will be economic problems that will put strains on peoples livelihood. Reform, management systems of resources and the system that we live in, would be EVEN harder to push. I can also say for a fact that a reform in our current system to become more sustainable, would amount to a large job loss. Yeses, renewable energy will create jobs and other fields would open up, but investors dont want to be the first to take such risks. It would then become necessary for us to reform our economic system, for more than one reason and it would take me very long to explain all the factors that make this a reasonable claim. As you can see this change is ridiculously more complicated that meets the eye. A number of other factors also influence resource use and more importantly resource availability, such as WAR and Disease - natural disaster, etc, something that will occur again, due to the state of the world. This is not negative, no, this is simply facts placed together to come to conclusion. Thats all they are intended to be. The truth is never negative, you will know this, is it inherently neutral.

Im off for now, my brain is getting the spins lol. I really enjoyed the relationship we have, we seem to have a compatible communication style which is why we have a good relate-ability(relationship). Good night, and have fun in the sun.

In a sustainable society I don't see our economic system being anything close to resembling what it is nowadays. I understand the migration between economic systems, infrastructure, social systems will be pretty harsh. People will be in a daze for a while but I still think people will adapt.

I mean look at the Great Depression. Sure it severely disrupted the system but it didn't get anywhere close to lookin like a 3rd world country. And nowadays we have even more resources than we did in the past, albeit a larger population.

I see what you're sayin tho Change. Instead of debating an untold future with ya I'd much rather respect you for deeply understanding what is so. That's a lot more than I can say for most people I know. No matter what we think will happen I'm sure we'll both affect the world in a much needed way.

I'll tackle ya on another topic.

Duly noted Tsurgi. You may not want to pin me down for to long once you've tackled me, I might get a little friskie or a little violent. Hope to see you around and glad to run into our relate-ability again.
