You ought to check out Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Accept, Venom, Bathory, Mayhem, Emperor, Metallica, Megadeth, Exodus, Testament, Possessed, Massacra, Obituary, Dismember, Children of Bodom, Norther, Eternal Tears of Sorrow, At the Gates, In Flames, and.... I'm listening to Darkmoon right now, they're pretty good. Hahahaha.

I've listed these in order of approximate genre, so if you find something you like, the names that are next to it will be somewhat similar. I hope this helps.

If you are looking for some of the older bands to listen to Pantera, Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath/Ozzy, AC/DC

Newer Metal a little bit more heavy, the key for new metal listeners is it takes a few times listening to songs/CD's before you get into it. Pay attention to the chorus's, the breakdowns, and the singers voice and lyrics....for me a lot of the time you can relate to many songs.....Killswitch Engage (The best metal band out there), singer Howard Jones his voice is amazing in the chorus's and breakdown's and the quick switch from screaming to singing is unbelievable. In Flames, All That Remains, Disturbed, Shadows Fall, Slipknot, theres are so many more...pick a good radio station to find out different songs/bands

No offense but me thinks you need to freshen up on your genres, not many of those are correct >.<

It depends on what you're into. I would say Pantera, megadeth, slayer, carcass, kalmah, early works of children of bodom, early works of in flames (the jester race), early dimmu borgir(stromblast is great), behemoth, nile....

there is so much, just listen to a few bands, and branch out from there.

Oh, and definitely Opeth, they are amazing, they can be very heavy, but sometimes the music is slow and beautiful. They are awesome.

agreed. also get familiar with the very old Alice Cooper. Not so much his junk from the 80's, but the albums that made him immortal: Killer, Muscle of Love, Billion Dollar Babies. This will give you a sense of the humor that has been in metal since the beginning....for example, it's supposed to be a joke...the ones who take it too seriously have been doing too many drugs...haha..

Other bands you can't do without are Deep Purple (Machine Head particularly, but Fireball is awesome as well), Jethro Tull (try listening to "Thick as a Brick" on acid sometime and you will hear metal...) and of course, any ACDC with Bon Scott. That should get you started.

Wow a lot of people here are recomending shit that you would get into after you've been through the beginning stages.

I would recomend starting off with some Nu-Metal and Old School thrash just to get a feel. Eventually you will grow out of these genres and you will probably think that Nu Metal sucks too once you starte getting into Death Metal.

If you arent ready for the harsh vocals, you should try power metal. Gamma Ray, Gravedigger, Symphony X, Blind Guardian, Kamelot, that kind of shit. The vocals are pretty clean. Metalcore is also a good genre for beginners. Listen to Trivium, Killswitch, AILD, Bullet, and the like. I wouldnt listen to them, but I find that they manage to really help pepple get into metal.

Once you've had enough of the beginner shit, you would probably start getting into Death Metal. Black Metal and Grindcore are two of the most extreme genres, and I doubt that you will be attracted to them on your first glimpse of metal. It actually took me a while to start getting into harsh vocals from the moment that I started listening to metal years and years ago.

But listen to what you want. Wikipedia is a really good place to look up bands.

These are the bands I'm into right now
    Behemoth (Blackened Death Metal)
    Kataklysm (Death Metal
    Zyklon (Blackened Death Metal)
    Belphegor (Blackened Death Metal)
    Absu (Black Metal)
Iskra (Crust with Black Metal influences)
    Terrorizer (Grindcore)
    Converge (Metalcore)
Blood Stain Child (Melodic Death Metal)

I'd lean more toward the [Threat Signal, Dry Kill Logic, Naildown, Carnal Forge, Daath, Children Of Bodom, Lamb Of God, Burn The Priest, Bloodsimple] direction, but to each his own.

Give Nuclear Assault, Kreator, Cryptic Slaughter, Overkill, Anthrax and Exodus a listen. Oldies but goodies.

For Death Metal i'd go for Melechesh, Decapitated, Cryptopsy, Arkhon Infaustus, Vader, The Berzerker, Visceral Bleeding, Diamanthian, etc.

Black Metal Id go for Carpathian Forest, Impaled Nazarene, 1349, Gospel of the Horns, Dead To This World, Gorgoroth, Enthroned, Darkthrone, Behexen, Dark Funeral, Beherit, Marduk, Black Witchery, Horned Almighty, etc

Also give Cock and Ball Torture, Sperm Overdose, Nunwhore Commando 666, Prosthetic ****, Excrementory Grindfuckers and Gut a listen to, you won't be disappointed.
