Living in my automobile

    just parking anywhere, sleeping in your car or on the ground.. overnite camping is illegal in every state that I have ever "rubber-tramped" (Western US)... ...It used to be legal in Utah, (used to not have to have auto insurance either, one of the last states.) but I think they finally clamped down on all that shit. The cops will not so politely point you to the nearest KOA campground or whatever...
    ...if you are lucky.
    If you are unlucky they will burn your fucking sleeping bag. Seriously

    actually, if you ask the cops first, politely, they'll tell you if there are places to camp overnight

    many small towns have parks that allow it, and it helps if the cops have already met you

    i have seen websites that discuss small town parks, including lists of towns with good ones

    the sites i saw were mostly for bicyclists, which might help you with the google
