Don't worry about people thinking your are crazy. It's the crazy ones who change society!! My biggest concern is for your safety out there. Do you have any wilderness survival knowledge? Do you know how to build a shelter, make a fire with sticks, find drinkable water, track and capture game, find edible plants, stay warm in winter, well you get the idea... Maybe you were planning on living in the woods on the fringe of society so you could go back to reality once in a while for food? I would suggest reading Tom Brown's Field Guide to Wilderness Survival and purchasing the Peterson's field guide to edible wild plants. Read Into the Wild by Krakauer and tell me if you still want to go live out there. I am not trying to be a jerk, I just want you to know what you would be getting yourself into. The woods will provide for you only if you know how to let them...
well, go for it.... but i guess u would enjoy more if u r with a small group of people.... in sweden we have a world called "lappsjuka" meanig that you might miss the company of others after awhile............... lycka till......
missing what you are trying to get away from sometimes is going to be your hardest ordeal on trying to live in the woods by yourself .......one never knows how much he missed the company of people till he is deprived of it .......another thing is the comment of petersen,s guide to edible plants .that book is written for north american plants ..................best of luck to you on your venture to the woods
I've always wanted to do something like this, I say go for it. It'll be hard for us moderns but we can adapt. Oh, and reading "Into The Wild" by Krakauer made me want to do this even more, oddly enough.
Yeah, it's great. The kid, against all odds and all advice, does what he wants, truly follows his bliss and there can't be anything wrong about that. He is an inspiration to us all, if you ask me. Better to die young while doing what you love than live long doing what you hate.
Don't go thinking up here in Canada it's all in the wood. I'm in Canada and I'm getting sick of the stress of living in the city too. What you see in tourists' guide or whatever is just a part of the Canada. Plus it's suppa freakin' cold up here.
Isnt the Norwegian woods part of the boreal forest that becomes covered in snow throughout the winter? It sounds like real hardcore survival!
i know plenty of people who have and and still do live in the woods ........it's not that hard a concept to deal with ...first off ,the hunter gatherer type is out of the picture ..not like in the olden days of our forefathers when there were no game laws ........you still have to deal with society in one way or the other but you can dramatically lessen the amount of time that you have to ....i remember like it was yesterday the early 50s when homes around here did not have the creature comforts that we enjoy today .....in my home we had electricity but no fridge,tv,indoor plumbing, hot water or gas or oil fired heat ....we had the basics ....outdoor privy ,hot water and cooking came from a wood stove and food was basically cooked from scratch .......big garden in the summer and the food that was produced was either put in a cool place for the winter ..example,potatoes,turnips,carrots,onions or was preserved by cooking and canning, like string beans, peas, carrots, even meats ...every house had a pig or two that they fattened up in the summer for the kill in the fall .....the meat was preserved in a number of ways ..from curing to smoking to canning ........some of the neighbors kept cows and used the cream for income so the rest of the milk was up for grabs ..what was left the next day went into the pig slop ....nothing was wasted ..what the average household puts out in the trash every week is about the same that a family went to dump in the back field twice a year .and a lot of these families had 9 to 12 kids .........a person can live alone and fairly cheap but some things have to come from society ..you can't be totally self sufficient .even our forefathers relied on others for some things ..even when the closest neighbor was 20 or 30 miles away
sounds cool. i'd like to try that for about a month.... if you live in the woods in a van how do you get on the internet?
Jennasia makes a very good point. I really want to live in the woods.. One day. Still in school. Afterwards though that would be my first thing. Just find someone to go out in the woods to live with. A nice change. Good luck.
