This is pretty dumb of me, but... While we are boycotting and not buying products from EITHER country--what happens to the children? How does that help them to recover from a life of poverty and disease? It is good that they don't have to work for the slave labor lords because there is no more work without funding, but now the children would be left to their own or their own familiy's devices to have food and such. I'm sure some of these families can't make it on their own, for instance, environmental problems such as drought or infertile farmland or perhaps no other means of sustanance....Anyway, if the whole family is workin in slave-like conditions, and get paid 5 cents a month, there must be a reason they are doing it--they might have no other options at the time. Donation of funds from richer countries doesn't help EVERYONE who is in poverty, maybe because of misuse of the funding...What I'm tryin to say is...besides boycotting, what can be done to help? The whole system needs fixin'...people with money who care and can work the system need to be workin in place of these slave-holders and up the conditions or something. Because I worry about what happens to the family who now has no real job due to our boycotting. I don't know tho...that's just my thought, told ya'll it may be dumb...

The way that I look at it, boycotting is what I can do personally right now. This way I am making a statement. Many people don't even know what the term "fair trade" means. By taking a stand, I am speaking out and informing others. It is a start. :)

I'm sorry but I personaly always use my cell phone so I'm not appauled by that.

Secondly why isn't gasoline on that list? Or Coca Cola (they killed union workers in a south american bottling factory) uuuummmm.... Medical drug companies, they test their experiemental drugs on African citizens.

And as for the girl that said its the job of the country to protect its citizens, I totaly agree with that. But when the rest of the world economicly robs these other countries who's job is it then? These African children are forced to work only because they're very survival depends on it. Africa is the worlds playground people, lets just face it. And can you even imagine how much crap goes on there that we still don't know about? Its scary.

KFC chickens (as well as meat processed by Tyson and Purdue) the way that they raise and torture their chickens is unacceptable. Factory farms encourage torture. The chickens are killed by being hung from a conveyor belt, in which they are hung from and their throats are cut. A problem here, some of the chickens are missed, and boiled to death in the defeathering tank!!

Isn't it one of the main messages of hippies that life is a very worthfull thing and that it can't ever be wasted?

In my opinion we shouldn't discuss whether it`s right to treat animals or humans badly just to get chicken on a burger or cheap chocolate or not.

If we really are hippies and no bored internet consumer who don`t have some better things to do than we'd say: It can't ever be right to treat children like slaves just to make money!
(I hope it's not to emotional...)

The only reason their parents force them to work is coz of people in countries like America who buy it and place mpre demand to be met. What you said was like saying " I dont think we should work on a cure for AIDS, because its the people who choose to get the risk and get it"

Sorry if this was posted already but

    - Chocolate from hersheys and mars companies is produced from cacao beans from the ivory coast where child slavery is prevelant on cacao farms.

    - No organic chocolate comes from the ivory coast, so if you buy organic, it is safe to say you are not supporting child slavery :)

    Also,
    - Coca Cola does something in India that is very unethical. I forget exactly what it was but it was a good reason to never buy coke again...

    And,
    - Any animal product that is not organic is probably terribly unethical. Factory farmed meat products, and dairy and eggs, are something I could never buy again in good conscious. That is where it is most important to buy organic.

    like that Ivory Coast Chocolate?
ETA: noni got that... but the points remain that people would rather NOT know overall, which leads to:
what do you do about it?

buy local when you can and ethically when you can't.
(for ex) I've not seen caoco or coffee or tea growing in the US outside of presentation gardens, so you can give 'em up or know your source.

support companies that pressure suppliers to do better.
That's one of the AR movement's complaints against KFC: they have the clout to change how things are done and select not to use their considerable leverage while sister Yum Brands company Taco Bell finally did, sort of, with some suspected exploitation in Florida of undocumented workers in the tomato fields. And Pepsi (Yum's parent company or major investor, I've slipped which) bent to consumer demand and divested it's holdings in Myanmar/ Burma.

Point out to the companies that you ARE interested in their practices and sources and LET THEM KNOW. power of the pen, baby.
in the Myanmar protest, I wrote those companies I actually spent money with, explained that while I liked their product, their policies gave me considerable indigestion, and I and my wallet would be finding alternatives until the situation changed.
I dropped industry terms like "heavy user" and gave an annual estimate of my own spending with them. (which was an eye opener for me as well.)

get involved in human rights watch sorts of organizations. Support their efforts and do spread the word.

    don't use the products.
Diamonds are easy: do not pay big prices for big probems; but what about that chocolate bar?
as noni said, start with organic (or at least fair trade). So it costs more? have less. you'll enjoy it more. offer your suffering up to humanity.

    Ok, your turn....
    this old worlds need fixing.
    what will you do?

The reason their parents force them to work is because otherwise they would starve to death. What are these people supposed to do for work when you take away their job at the factory? The correct way to fix the problem is for the government to raise the minumum wage.

Don't forget the lethal frying pan. Every time you cook eggs, you're preparing your system for some harmful chemicals. I once saw this thing on TV about all the common products that people use everyday (Pesticides, toothpaste, etc.), and the effects that they have on the human body. This man did a test on himself after using these products, and his chemical readings were rather impressive for unhealthy little keepsakes.
