sativian I saw you are from the dutch antillies. Do they speak dutch over there too? And it it like south africa. There they do, but there accent is very strong and I have to pay close attention to understand them

thanks for asking and sorry I haven't been around much.
Weeelll ... things are going quite slowly. I have lots to do at the moment and to be honest it is not extremely motivating when language learning mostly means "take the book and fight your way through". I'd love to learn together with others (especially because otherwise my pronunciation will be crappy), but I have the choice between expensive courses and "I want to be able to say hello in Dutch till next summer" courses.
I found that listening to music (Blof! ) in Dutch helps me A LOT when I have read (and understood) the lyrics. If you listen to something often enough, you're able to imitate it pretty well I think.
So, my idea is - maybe I can find Dutch native speakers who are willing to read texts, record them and send them to me. It can be anything really - random ramblings, newspaper articles, cooking recipes - anything. Only condition is that I need an exact transcription. Of course, I would do the same in German in exchange.. Ok, I need to put my thoughts into a decent order, getting all messed up here. But do you get the general idea?
And would you (or anybody else!) be willing to help me?

Hi-I'd like to know if you could please help me out with Dutch slang?-I'm working on a Dutch language project.

 

Hahaha! That's the truth!! I have never found a good online dictionary.

I do have a nice Dutch/English one (you know, an actual book) that a very good friend sent to me, though.

I've been studying a bit here and there for about 18 months now, and I'm sort of slow with it, I think. But getting a little better all the time.

 

There is actually quite a good online German-Dutch dictionary (at least it has hardly ever failed me) at uitmuntend.de I do have two "proper" dictionaries but when writing e-mails or so the online one is simply quicker and more convenient.

I'm Flemish..Dutch is different..
some funny words are..
asjemenou..gozer..wat eng zeg..flikker op..
een bakkie koffie..een poffertje..
that's like Dutch slang...
anyway..the DUTCH..are GREAT people..
I simply love them..even better then the bloody Belgians..

I find the ui sound to be much more difficult than g/ch. I'm German so ch is not really a problem for me and the grammer is also not too difficult (compared to, say, French), but intonation and that strange way of talking "binnensmonds" ... oh my. But I'll make it, I'm sure. Can already do smalltalk pretty well and usually get what people are saying if it's not too complex.

 

Dutch is almost like german.. i never learned german but often i can understaind germans.

I'm currently using a widget for Mac OS X 10.4.11 and I am loving it. It also comes with other languages such as Italian, Greek, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Spanish and more!
It converts words English to Dutch or Dutch to English. It is a very helpful little device. Nonetheless very unhelpful for Windows users maybe like you. Hope I helped.
