I dunno, I don't really think it's our problem. Does that make sense? I mean, yeah, we'd be the victims if something happened. But I don't see that there's anything gay people can do about it. Do we make ourselves more acceptable to straights? Stay in the closet, or only reveal our sexuality to people once we know how they'll react? Acting differently because of these kinds of violent acts only weakens our (hopefully universal) position that we deserve the same treatment as anyone else. When the London bombings happened, sure, people were scared, but it was important to us that we didn't change our lives out of fear. Homophobic attacks might just be impulses, but they might just as easily be trying to make an example, to show us "the price of being faggots". Well quite frankly, fuck that shit.

As a group, we have quite a lot going for us, to be honest. As well as stereotypically being averse to violence, we don't generally have kids (which is a good thing, despite what the more lunk-headed right-wingers will have you believe), get paid slightly more on average that heteros, and because of these latter two factors, have masses of disposable income. Result: we contribute hugely to the economy.

I dunno, I've found if you put it to people in terms they understand, they're usually either more sympathetic, or at least amused enough not to be angry.

That's harsh...sorry you have a dad like that. I can't imagine what it would have been like for me growing up if one of my parents had an opinion like that.

^ Well, maybe a little weird...How are people gonna see you as a successful homosexual without seeing you as you? I mean, will you announce that you are homosexual and that everything else spins off that?

You raise an intersting point..go on with it please.

Hey, do we seriously generate more income on average than heteros? Do you have a source for that? I'd love to cite something, because I've stated something similar in the past without having a really specific citation.

I can't remember where I heard it, but the gist of it was that we earn nominally more than straight guys. The key difference is that we spend a much larger proportion of our income than straight guys.

Man come to think of it same year in biology class the teacher graded on the curve so when the majority of the class failed over refusing to learn about evolution, us normaly flunky potheads in the back all got B's. I remember a buff asshole football player repeatedly yelling "god made me, I aint come from no monkey".

Not so much about the incident that started this thread:

But the gay bash thing, is it always really about hating gay guys? some young men can just be extra angry, it can be just about picking on someone thats weaker, they might not know he's gay at the time, doesnt find out till after when the newspapers report it as a gay hate crime. Thats not to say sometimes it is all about gay hate.

We would be more likely to pay attention and be more horrified at these crimes, but people get murdered for all sorts of stupid things; arguments over a loud stereo, someones dog shat on a neighbours lawn, cutting someone else off in traffic

I'd broadly agree with this. It's not been my experience that your average lunk-headed street-thug has a solid grasp of what homosexuality actually is. If I get beat up, it's not like they know I'm gay just from looking at me, so I wouldn't insist that it was a homophobic incident or anything. And I guess if they were that incapable of telling who is and isn't gay, they might just as easily direct actual homophobia at a heterosexual. Does it count as a homophobic attack if the intention is anti-gay but the victim is actually straight?

    Haha, awesome.

It is incredible that hate is spread so randomly and with such ease. That is a major crime. At the heart of it lies some very sad souls who are very unsure of who and what they are, and to raise their game they start spreading hatred as a way to control others. Vile. Whenever I hear anti gay stuff spoken I immediately become very interested, as the speaker is inevitably reiterating something that worries him or her innately. I like to find out why.
