honestly kanye is a genius. he's got a big ego and he doesnt give a shit about anything - which i mean props, he still sells and makes more money than you could dream of making. he makes great ass beats and that's what he was first and primarily noted for, and i think that's where he stands out. he still raps though and is pretty respectable when he isn't talking some random bullshit...i just have a lot of respect for him cause he's worked his shit and does what he wants to do.

 

Airplane and Magic both kick major ass - but are better when the chorus is sung by B.o.B. himself (usually with back-up singers)

Lupe's best song is and probably always will be Kick Push. That's not saying much. He has awesome flow, but his lyrics always have such amateur moments.

I don't think any of the rappers of the times are very legendary. The ones that could be and should be don't get shit for attention.
Over the ones that steal half of their lyrics and diss young women that sing love songs.

 

Looks like I had to just step back and smoke a bowl because it looks like we agree (and defending Kanye is hard as fuck). I agree that there are way better rappers out there recording better shit, but just never quite hit it big, and I respect the fact that they keep it at it, grinding and making awesome music. The bigwigs of any industry are ussually not the best as a matter of fact; they typically just meet the right people (Justin Bieber much?).

The only thing I took offense to is that you can't hate music JUST cause it's mainstream, that's as close-minded as listening to ONLY mainstream music. I respect the fact that Kanye is a bit fucked and some of his shit is really wack but if an album is to be debated, debate the album not the artist.

 

And just to chime in on this other fight, I don't think you can deny that Lupe is the best lyricist right now (although thats not saying too much) but the industry as a whole is a bit wack at this point. Its more beats than lyrics and hype than skill that's why the bigwigs with the most money are running it right now, they can practically create artists at will (Nicki Minaj anyone? 50k a verse and she's horrible).

Jay-z's newer albums are wack (should have stayed retired) but you can't deny he's still a legend. Finally as far as up and comers I see Wiz, Lupe, and BOB (if he stops with the gay shit).

 

They're not the type of songs I ussually like but I have to agree for the sole reason that it reminds me of the old 90's flow. He works with the beat and actually follows it rather than fighting against it or simply ignoring it (On to the next one- Jay-z aha). Reminds me of Eminem from his "The Eminem show" album, not the hottest lyrically but god damn he's got flow.

No, it's ass because the beats rarely match the flow, the lyrical themes are very repetitive and narrow, the lyrics have gotten much simpler (rhyming a word with itself is consider mic skills, "like" is the most common word in rap, etc.), the industry is much more hype-based than ever before, and it's the dominant genre in a very low-demand mass-consumerist age.

They aren't as popular because they aren't as backed by the mass media machine; and people are sheep.
Each one of them is way better than Lupe Fiasco or Jay-Z. (Well, I'm not so sure about slug..)

I think that judging the song by the chorus is pretty hurtin. I don't like the chorus, I think it's expressly for mass appeal (got it on radio didn't it?) but still, good message, good flow and fuck it, i'l say it. Good lyrics.
