I think it's pretty funny. One can become too politically correct about humour and lose the fun in life. I'm quite happy to poke fun at my own liberal/ left-wing beliefs, if I didn't laugh at it all, I'd probably end up crying....
I completely agree with most of what you said. The only part I don't agree with is your assessment that the joke here was funny. It wasn't. Not because it was directed towards hippies. I'm all about poking fun at whoever/whatever. It's just that the joke is pretty cliche. That joke's been around for ages and the punchline's been replaced by many different a group.
Exactly my thoughts! :cheers2: Well, I don't see burned hippies. Isn't there a large difference between a joke (although pretty cliché indeed) and the actually action?
in the early seventies I was in a hospital picking up a girl that I knew who had been raped and at the nurses station two cops and the nurses were laughing it up. The joke was what do hippies call free love these days? Rape. I guess they just weren't being politically incorrect. PAX
It's entirely about context. Of course it's inappropriate for police and nurses dealing with a rape case to make jokes about it. And one shouldn't set out offend or target someone with bullying humour either. It's a double-edged sword, but I think people can use their common sense without losing their sense of humour....
Honestly, the day hippies start telling me what jokes I can and can't tell, is the day I start burning them. If the guys on the radio had actually said "Hey, lets test it out and actually burn a hippy" or if "hippy burning" was an actual cultural phenomenon, perhaps I would be worried. A lot of people who get offended by dark humour, or so-called "inappropriate" jokes, usually don't understand them or the contexts in which they are told or the reasons why people use dark humour. They assume because they would not make such a joke unless it was deliberate attempt to offend or be hateful, that the same must be true of the joke-maker. Do you know the people who made this joke? How they live their daily lives? What they're like? It's easy to jump to arms when the good name of our "team" is brought into question, easy, but not wise.
This right here is the problem with this country right now. Everyone must be happy or there is something wrong with it. You no longer have the right to pursue happiness. Happy is damn near a law now. Do you think that joke made someone happy? I bet it did. Do you think it made your parents happy when you stayed up to late to watch TV during a school week? No, but they probably let you do it a few times because it made you happy. Sometimes you just have to laugh it off (like so many of you have said). Or you could ask yourself why you are listening to a radio station that makes you so angry. Do we take the radio station off the air because it made you sad? And then let other people loose there jobs? Or do you just turn the station? Thank god these people running the show today did not run 40-50 years ago. Chuck Berry would have been hung, And Elvis would have been placed in front of a firing squad.
omfg people! get a life! if i can't fuckin come to a hippie forum and express displeasure over a fuckin violent anti-hippie fuckin joke... oh forget it! thanks for the fuckin support!
Of course you can express displeasure, but humour's a very subjective thing, people have every bit as much a right to disagree with you. Personally I think there are more troubling things in the world than a poor joke and it's not worth getting stressed about. If you want to that's fine, but you can't expect everyone to support your opinion....
A hippy joke that I think is funny, How do you get seventeen hippies into a VW bug ? You throw in a joint. How do you get seventeen hippies out of a VW bug ? You throw in a bar of soap .
Fuckery fuckleton, that doesn't appear to be much of a hippy-oriented response :S 'Get a life?'? We're all living, we all have opinions, you disagree with a few and start telling people to 'get a life'?! Ridic. More fuck's in there than you'd find in a roy chubby brown dvd. Learn to love. Hippies show that everything can be and is best looked at through the eyes of love.. even if I don't fully comprehend that notion. I agree the joke was in poor taste and can completely understand your displeasure. But now it's like a vendetta with a side order of sarcasm against fellow hippies who don't take as much offence from the so-called 'joke' as you obviously have. And THAT (not YOU) is pathetic.
now that is more like it. those jokes play with hippie stereotypes, but there is no implied violence. i'm having a bit of trouble understanding why being jarred by a sudden vision of violence from a public medium is so hard for people to understand. maybe the people in this thread who are so offended by the simple expression of one person being turned off by a joke about violence...catching someone on fire...maybe it's because they have never experienced violence towards themselves. lucky people.
^ ^ Oh, don't you believe it. I for one definitely do not fit into that lucky people category of which you speak. I'm faced with violence practically everyday I decide to walk the street to town (1 mile stretch), and have took a beating by not one, but a group of scumbags (my nose tells the tale..) for being a lad with long hair. Even sadder is the fact that in the eyes of tracksuit wearing gangs of mindless cunts, every long haired male is a 'goth' or a 'mosh'. 'Hippy' is merely myth to these knife weilding council house living, tax dodging fuckholes.
sounds like you're living among the council flats of the UK somewhere? sorry you're dealing with that kind of crap. that sucks.
When those thugs that beat you up hear those types of jokes on the radio- that just reinforces their behaviour. Maybe next time burning you will be the cool thing to do. It's obviously very acceptable -----if people find it funny. PAX
