I would say 20 minutes under the shower just scrubbing your hair is a lot time- that would use a lot of water- plus I'd get bored after awhile
20 minute showers are the shit. I never put a second of thought as to how much water I am wasting when I take a shower. I don't even take one everyday but when I do it's at least 20 minutes. I have been washing my hair with water only since Feb. It's working so much better. There is never a need to wash it after a week or two like there was when using shampoo or soap. My hair hasn't felt so clean while still feeling natural with all the oil. It takes a lot less time to dry too. It's eliminated all dandruff and itchy scalp issues. I can't foresee going to back to washing with soap again when water actually works better.
Amen Vig! I have no scalp issues either unless I don't wash for a few weeks then I get Majah 'ruff. As much as I'd like to try it, I just don't see water alone getting my hair clean.
yeah i'd always feel semi-clean if i just used water. plus, my locks are still young, i don't want old stuff built up in there years from now. it's hard to lift things from your hair without soap.
I dunno...the ends of my dreads are full of crap anyway, and I've done some hardcore washing on them. I don't care too much about dirt as long as it's clean dirt lol
So.. Here's the stupid questions: How do you get it clean without shampoo? Do you still wash as normal? Or do you just stand there for x amount of time and let the shower strem wash it? Sorry, I'm coming across like a twat, I don't get it.
Well to be honest I don't even really bother with washing anymore. My dreads are so tight that they don't absorb water and if they do it's minimal. Seems pointless to me. Only time I "wash" my hair (and by wash I mean rinse with water) is if I did something that made me sweat. Then I will just rinse my scalp off. And I don't stink
I don't mean to sound rude but I am pretty sure for those who don't use any soap on their hair has that smelly hair smell, like I said before maybe they don't mind it but to ME that is a really bothering scent. Rub your scalp right now and then smell your fingers and tell me there is absolutely no scent?
Can something only be classed as clean if you dissolve and strip away every last molecule of natural oils or what? Does regular shampoo kill all bacteria? What is 'clean' ? *shrug* Anyways, it's working for me so far. I'll prob do a deep cleanse every now and then, dunno. Yeh
Oh no, I didn't mean it like that. I'm just curious as to how you would get it clean. I have pretty greasy type skin anyway and I just can't imagine how water alone would get rid of grease buildups.
There is absolutely zero smells. No smell good or bad, totally neutral. Now after a week without rinsing it will smell like smoke or whatever else I have been around but as soon as I rinse it, the smell is totally removed. It actually there is less of a smell than it did when I washed it with soap. It has the smell of wet clean hair until it dries, but after it dries I can't smell a thing. Soap entirely over rated and emphasized. I still use bronners for my body like I always have I just don't put it in my hair anymore.
(note I haven't read the entire thread yet)just wanted to say I don't think I've used shampoo in about a month unless I'm forgetting edit: so I read the thread and... I love the smell of natural hair but I'm odd I don't use shampoos or body wash its only recently that I noticed I never really liked body wash or shampoo because really all along I've barely used them. I think I have like three full bottles of body wash thats only been used once all the shampoo gets used because even though my boyfriend has hair that is less than an inch long thinks he needs to wash his hair....what can I say I love him but to my point I think that soap robs the body of natural bacteria and oils. ^so thats long and probably won't make sense
That's because you use soap and shampoo. It's the cause. Baking soda did it to me too. I have had really straight oily greasy hair all my life until I quit washing it so much. It got lots better with dreads but it was just because it was less noticeable. The buildup continued until after a month without any additives to my hair. I was super skeptical too but I thought, well it can't hurt. I do miss the smell of and lathering of soap and what not in my hair. But in the end it's not worth all the buildup and dandruff it caused.
My hair never gets oily so I just use a tiny bit of a yucca soap bar or some bronners tea tree and it works like a charm, I just do it after I have been swimming in a pool or I smell like chlorine :ack2:
dragon.. ive got a full new bar of KBoy shampoo that im just not using cause im doin the water-only thing.. i was speaking to someone today, hes a proper conservative, suit & tie kinda bloke, always smart and whatever.. turns out he was once a punk/hippy and had dreads. we was talking about washing, and how mature 'real' dreads dont really absorb any water or soap so they dont get clean, and if they do absorb any it wont dry 100%.... what i think im trying to say is, water prolly wont give people the same clean feeling,, but i only really rinse my scalp off and dont really wash the dreads, so perhaps thats all its good for?
Ohh thats good to know smelly I think it is only the scalp that needs rinsing, cus thats the bit that gets itchy etc... I can't really explain what I mean xD The scalp is the bit that is living and will react to bacteria and stuff... and the dreads are dead hair.. so stuff won't do anything.. Hm? Anyone get what I mean? xD
