So now we seen the end game, the worst case scenario. Six nuclear reactors all meltdown.

Just in: Reactor #4's shell has broken. That means the inner core is exposed as the fire has already breached the outer containment, I believe.

The workers are supposedly going back to the plant now. The Japanese gov't had to raise the allowable radiation exposure limit by 2.5 times so they could go back, hopefully fix everything and commit hari kari at the same time...

The level of radiation at the plant surged to 1,000 millisieverts early on Wednesday before coming down to 800-600 millisieverts. If 20 millisieverts is a normal background yearly dose, then anyone exposed to 800 is getting 40 years dosage in 1 hour, yes? That can't be good. I'm sure the workers are wearing protective clothing and getting washdowns, but still, there's a lot of exposure.

I would assume those workers with the highest levels of radiation contamination remain., to spare the other engineers lives, case they need to return should the other parish. Only so many people in the world understand this equipments, its not a Nintendo unfortunately..

Incredible to think with all the technology that Japan has they don't have robots that can go in and fix things when it all goes belly up...

I thought people that just depend entirely on nuclear energy, are robots..

UPDATE: 10 mile Evacuation zone declared at another nuclear plant the Daini plant, 10 miles south of the Daichi plant. No further information is available about what is going on there.

Meanwhile radioactive plumes are rising from two reactors at the Daichi plant. They're saying the containment shell of the reactors has likely been breached.

Radioactivity has been found in tap water 50 miles away from the nuke plant.

The US military has moved all its ships to the OTHER SIDE of Japan, far away from the nuke plants. Gee, isn't the US military supposed to be able to work on a nuclear battlefield with much higher levels of radiation? Why are they RUNNING from a few rads? Are they whimping out? Meanwhile the Japanese workers at the plant are risking their lives to shutdown the reactions, and Americans are afraid to be 60K away...

I am NOT impressed with the US military today. Where would they run to hide if this happened in the USA? Or what if they really had to deal with a nuclear WAR! Would the US military run away? This is shameful.

The US military should run back home to their base cause they are an embarrassment. They care more for themselves than for those victims of this disaster. Typical American Gen-X mentality.

Unless I'm mistaken, during both Gulf wars, US soldiers and Marines had to wear special suits in that godforsaken heat of the Iraqi desert that was supposed to protect them from chemical, biological and radiological weapons. Why haven't they been sent to Japan by now?

If they were supposed to keep fighting in the aftermath of a dirty bomb being used on the battlfield why would a little fallout be a problem in winter?

UPDATE: Toyota has ordered all its US car plants to shutdown. Toyota is facing a supply disruption in auto parts due to the earthquake and Tsunami.

Meanwhile the Yen has reached an all-time high verses the US dollar. It seems there's a big demand for Yen as the crisis continues in Japan. The Japanese gov't is selling foreign assets especially US debt, repatriating Yen to be used in recovery. Likewise Japanese investors are doing the same.

Already this disaster is far worse than Three Mile Island judging by these radiation readings 20K away from the plant. This is many times the level measured during the TMI incident.

The US government is calling for all US citizens to evacuate if they are within 50 MILES of the damaged nuclear power plant at Fukushima.

Looks like it's gamma ray time, folks. This is why those workers are risking their lives. Gamma rays are deadly, they go thru the body and mess up cells. This is in addition to the extremely high levels of radioactive cesium and iodine that they are reporting.

I'm wondering if the gamma rays are why the US military is staying way clear...

Sorry but I’m not so quick to chalk their behavior to nationalism or pride in ones own country [IMG]

The Japanese are a defeated people who are used to facing hardship.

They’ve spent two century warring on their neighbors in the hope of expansion and have yet to gain any territory. coupled with their utter humiliation and defeat at the hands of the allies during World War II they’ve become passive and not so sure of themselves.

Sure they’ve made strides in consumer electronics goods and in the automotive industry but each in turn has leveled off over time because the pace was unsustainable - they’ve lost their edge.

Hotwater (now that's a timely name!)

I just saw an animation of what is happening in reactor #4. There is a spent fuel storage area that is NOT contained for WAY MORE spent rods than were in the reactor itself, and apparently they are stored very close together (this is important) at the top of the reactor building. And now the water is gone. So the rods are heating up, releasing radioactive gases including cesium and iodine, as well as gamma rays. Will those rods "ignite" and catch fire? Have they done that already? Can they go super-critical, where they start a chain reaction that can't be stopped?

Is everything that can go wrong, going wrong, or is it just my imagination?
