Yeah, Port Arthur, Texas. That's the small town she got the hell out of. Can't say I blamed her. :sunny: QP
Now that I think about it, I've seen some people trash on Jim Morrison as well, even on this site, so I don't really see a double standard with Joplin but she does get some criticism.
Yeah I hear you. But how often do you hear Joplin on the radio (as opposed to Morrison)? I like to listen to the radio while I take a long (30 minute) shower. I like the so-called "oldie" stations. The Doors invariably accompany my soapy heaven. But I have not heard a Big Brother (or Janis tune) even once. Something is wrong. Big time. QP
IMO - Janis was the most Powerful Emotionally charged Female Vocalist of my Generation = Often imitated, never quite matched - IMO https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWCwJdGlBwQ"]Janis Joplin - Cry Baby [Live][1970] - YouTube
She still gets lots of love and appreciation. I wouldn't worry what some people might say.. It's no big deal. It's not sad they dislike her sound either. Different taste and preferences in music do that. Dissing her as a person while they don't even know her is worthless of course but hey, that happens to every star it seems. Nothing puzzling about it.
Just sounds like it was more about whichever site it was you were on. Some rock/metal fans, metal fans in particular can be infuriating, neve budge from one particular style. I dont see any double standards with Joplin, her and Jimi were the coolest from that era, I've always seen them presented as cool
She gets play on our local 'classic rock' station. Not as much as jimi or jim, But you at least get to her some. What gets me, Is all the songs of just these three made, And they play the same handful from each? Like they were one hit wonders. That's the only complaint I have of radio stations, Well that and the 36 song replay/shuffle. Oh well, Youtube, Download or buy the CD and that's all bypassed :2thumbsup:. Powerful and emotionally charged was the words I was trying to think of! People gravitated to her from her powerful performances right out of the box. I wish I was around to actually see Janis, Jim and the real credence in the hay day.

Yes. The harmonic chords. Like two voices at once. I didn't know her, of course, but we did pass and say hi to one another at a Hells Angels shindig in downtown Frisco. I have read that she didn't do much of any thing except Southern Comfort. Ranger would know, I'm sure. I saw her many times around the bay area and she literally made the hair on my neck stand up!
If you want to go by charting position of singles, Jimi could technically be considered a one hit wonder. Janis only had 2 songs break the top 40. Due to albums sales though, it is odd why radio doesn't play more songs from these groups.
Yep Southern Comfort was her drink of choice most times. Was that downtown concert one of the Hell's Angels gigs at the Longshoreman's Hall?
Hey, thanks for that. I think "Ball and Chain" (from Monterey Pop) shows just what an amazing singer she was. It's a far superior version than the one they included on her Greatest Hits album. Luckily, you can now listen to Monterey Pop on CD: I found a copy at my public library. QP
they're both pretty much never. jimi too. granted, i don't primarily listen to the classic rock stations anymore because i'm just too burned out on the 12 songs they play on repeat all day every day, but i still hear enough of them to know that none of the 3 mentioned artists get any airtime anymore.
Everything I've read about her says that she was totally approachable. So unlike the rock stars of today. Might be a short story for you here, scratcho. You really are a good writer (IMO). Some things I'm curious about: Did she seem happy? So much of what I've read about her always talks about the negative stuff (I even had a half-crazed owner of a record store in Chicago once tell me that I wouldn't have liked Janis: She talked to herself. She was always drunk, etc. ) Yet the record store hypocrite had no problem selling me Cheap Thrills, Kosmic Blues, Joplin in Concert, and Pearl. I'd only heard her Greatest Hits, so I was ecstatic to discover these "new" albums. This was in the late 1970s, so it was pretty hard to find Joplin's previous albums. I swallowed my pride, but cursed the woman for being such a total bitch. Janis Joplin put her to shame big time. At least I got to hear all of the Janis tunes that were never played on the radio. And I was hooked for life. QP
Yeah, that's been my experience. It's so weird given that Janis, Jimi, and Jim were the 3 biggest rock stars from the late 1960s. QP
Because not everyone is the same, and not everyone likes the same type of music and same artists. I for one don't really care about the pain in her music or her persona, I don't listen to her stuff. But yeah, good voice!
the messages she croaked, or whatever you want to call it instead of singing, she didn't have to. had they been sung sweetly, would they have had half the punch?
Ranger---I saw her at a venue that had arches on what was like an outside porch and across the street were parked a solid row of HA bikes. I believe she played with the Rascals that night. The angels were giving away free beer and at one point an angel starting smacking overzealous guys in the front clamoring for beer with a pump from a keg. I once saw her in San Jose with her SC bottle on stage , which she took some healthy drinks from.
