When it comes to Janis: well I like her... a lot, but I wouldn't call it freakishly obsessed. She is amazing though, anyone can tell you that.
define "freakishly" LOL if you mean having learned every riff and performed most of the songs of both those groups than I suppose I would be guilty on that count. These are two bands that seriously changed the face of female vocals in the eye of the mainstream music biz, regardless of any single opinion. The Airplane was one of my first freakouts, and the songs that Balin sings are as good or better to me than most of what Grace wrote while with them. Hearing them hate each other onstage, and the challenges vocally is what makes them good, Jorma and Jack Casady are what make them great! However once Marty leaves the band I have very little tolerance for them. Crown of Creation is my fave studio work of theirs. BigBrother and Janis are tops, and they do some songs that touch places in people not everyone is happy with. That she was "whiskey voiced" is a bunch of BS, her sound is best when she was younger and rested. There just wasnt an understanding of what the constant touring could do to a persons voice (much less anything else). They get less credit in the musicianship, but have some superb abilities, and are actually more complex songwriters than the Airplane. Pete Albin is a great bassist, as well as a nice guy to meet should you get to catch one of their gigs. I could go on and on about these two! great topic
