I don’t know why people get bent out of shape over this. I get it, It’s Hollywood, and Hollywood has political agendas, but the best thing to do for situations like this, is not waste your money on the movie. If you haven’t noticed, whenever they come out with some new concept and put a spin on traditional movie characters (changing race, gender, etc.), what happens at the box office (especially opening weekend), is the true test and what they only care about is how much $$$$ did they make?! If it “goes south” and bombs at the box office, they either bring the character back in original form or simply kill it off because the movie did that bad. I completely (COMPLETELY) understand the guy in the video’s frustration, but at the end of the day, it’s Hollywood- experimenting as they always have, to see what sells. Unfortunately everything has a political agenda now, and we can’t just go to the movies to be entertained anymore.
well this is silly to discuss if you don't know Doctor Who and I barely know it. but it isn't really the same as James Bond. i don't see it as leeching off the established character... Doctor Who gets a new body from time to time.. no reason it shouldn't be female.
I was generally speaking with this thread mostly in mind, like Ghostbusters would be another example though.
I mean I'm not going to be outside picketing the movie or anything but I'm bent out of shape because I don't have the option to waste money on the character in his conceived role, which is essentially along the lines of what you said in the bolded part below. Bond movies are made to appeal to men and they have used a fairly basic formula to accomplish that. Yah, I can understand this to an extent but perhaps due to nostalgia and sentimentality , the 007 swap doesn't sit well with me. It's just this particular role though, like the new Men in Black features a girl as one of the main characters which has traditionally been guys and I have no issue with that.
It sure looks different! But surely it cannot be the end of the world, since James Bond will only just be retiring... not dying... right!?
I got a question to you as an author of fiction... Let's say there was a movie adaptation of your book, would you mind or be bothered by a significant recasting of your main characters? Say in either title or any immutable characteristics?
It honestly doesn’t sit well with me either, growing up and watching most of the Bond movies. I don’t think it’s going to do well at all, but, it’s a just an experiment.
I love The Dark Tower books. I knew I wasn't going to watch the film as soon as I read they were casting Roland as a black man. Because it just doesn't work with various points in the story. (since then i did watch the first five minutes but it was bad in other ways too so i stopped) If you notice, I never was arguing that it shouldn't matter they make Bond a woman. I don't care either way because I'm not a fan. I just wondered how the Doctor Who thing went.. I wasn't giving an opinion on whether they was good/bad okay/not okay either. I just didn't see a reason it shouldn't be a woman in that case. With Dark Tower, I could see reasons it shouldn't be a black man. I would not want a significant casting of my characters, no. But I don't feel I'm being hypocritical here.
I do think when 'Gender changes' happen be it 007, Dr Who, or Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica, there is a trick lost and what would prevent any outrage from fans/followers:- Jane Bond (as said previously 'Code name') Dr Who had a 'genetic daughter' in a previous episode/storyline Starbuck (sister/daughter) The point being these could be additional/alternative characters, that keep the ethos of persona whilst still putting a different slant on things IMO
And I can’t see James Bond being played by a black man either. He doesn’t fit into the script due to the fact that most of his assignments take place in Eastern Europe. I'm sorry, he'll obviously stick out and bring attention to himself, which doesnt make him a good spy then.
i like beautiful women as much as the next guy, but it's not enough to make me watch a movie that has nothing else that interests me. i am tired of the same basic movie being put out over and over, but i mostly just don't watch them unless i happen to be somewhere that it can't be avoided.
Does anyone know if they'll be 'Mr' Moneypenny? or, will the female Bond will have a preference that addresses the same-sex angle?
maybe it will be a positive. because isn't the franchise super old? i mean they could have done anything, but perhaps this is something we actually need to see.
what we actually need to see is for hollywood to put out a movie that hasn't already been made 73 times before. but clearly, that will never happen. of course, this is kind of why. they make a half-assed attempt at doing something semi-novel, and everyone throws a tantrum. fuck this, let's just reboot spiderman again.
How can they possibly make something novel? They've already done everything. All they can really do is break ground on gender roles. Buddy movies, cop movies, romcoms, superheroes, war operas, etc. etc. It's all been done. I have a hard time thinking of something new they could do that doesn't revolve around replacing someone's gender or making the lead gay or something.
