Jack Kerouac

I read some of his quotes, and I didn't really like it. The ideas are there but I just don't like his wording and style. I would still rather read his books over most other things.

 

I'm reading on the road again right now. Though my favourite so far has been the dharma bums.

 

I´m reading "The Dharma Bums" right now, in english. The first Kerouac book for me. Can´t tell if I like it so far, I´m just at chapter 3 and I don´t understand as much as I´d like to...

im reading the dharma bums at the mo, its good, cant say its my favorite book i've read in a while

kerouac is great, he's got a definate still...im not a huge fan of his works, but it certainly is interesting

 

Dharma Bums is my favorite, followed by On the Road....I also enjoyed reading Big Sur, it showed the dark side of his freewheeling life and his decent into insanity.

I think Kerouac's works chronicle an interesting time in history, and a sub-group not yet corrupted or imitated.

 

What exactly is a "Dharma Bum"? Not knowing that, keeps me a lot from understanding that book. Can somebody explain that to me, please?

 

I think it has to do with their buddhist beliefs and their wandering bum-like (transient) lifestyle...not exactly sure what Dharma means specifically, but I believe its buddhist related.

 

the dharma bums is about a bunch of beats in the 50's who are also buddhists...calling themselves "dharma bums" or teaching bums...dhama is the buddist word for teaching...

its about the adventures of this guy who is travelling around in search of enlightenment, living like nomadically and as the buddha would have, with compasion and in poverty.

 

I'm currently reading "The Subterrenians" and from there I'm going onto Big Sur.

From the ones I've read, The Dharma Bums was by far my favourite.

I've heard alot of good things about The Dharma Bums...I hope to read it soon.

 

On the road... that is a great book

 

I'm way into Big Sur now and it's probebly the best Kerouac book I've ever read... amazing book all around.

 

I going to read visions of cody. Am currently trying to understand The naked lunch from Burroughs.

Dharma Bums was a bit boring. To much buddism. I like the books with a fast tempo. Dharma bums is it almost but on the road is something else. An absolute brilliant book.
I wish I was Neal Cassady. That man really lived. First his trips described in On the road and then his trips desribed in Tom Wolfe's Kool aid acid test with the Merry Pranksters. Wow.

 

OTR. Desolation Angels and Big Sur are my faves - but I've read them all. I love Jack's spirit. But my heart weeps for him at times.....

I'd also like to recommend 'Jack Kerouac - a portrait' by Barry Miles, which is far and away the best biog of Jack, and the most sympathetic - it gave me major new insight into Jack's writing and his life, esp. his relationships with the other beats.
