Mine were family. The first one I stole from work named her doa. But those chicken factories pump them so full of steroids and who knows else what that they don't live more than a year.
Mom felt bad so she bought me 2 for my birthday. (Worst birthday present ever by a large margin)
I didn't want more chicks. I rescued the last one but moved on from them when she died. But Laverne and Shirley grew on me...until they ran off to the neighbors yard when I let them out. Neighbor called the cops and pointed out an old law against chickens in the main part of town. Had to give them up. Woman who took them had a yard that looked like a sanctuary. So the bright side is Laverne and Shirley probly have a better life than I would have given them.
