Hairs get picky due to the fact that when you shave, you cause the hair to have a wider stiff point or end. Natural hair gradually thins to a very thin point. When you shave, the hair gets cut at the base where it is wide. This causes the hair to be stiffer and ben less when it is medium length.

You need to ride out the pickyness. The hair will eventually thin back to a soft point and get more flexible as it grows longer. Also, all of the hairs will begin to kida move together and pick you less. They will have a usual path of movement.
