Police release name of alleged rubber check writer
Kingston, ON, Canada / CKWS TV CKWS Newswatch April 15, 2014 02:07 pm

KINGSTON – Police have released the name of man accused of writing $18,500 worth of bad checks to businesses from Odessa to Brockville. Earlier this month, police issued a warning to businesses that someone representing a Wolfe Island business was writing checks for equipment and other merchandise at businesses in the city. The checks were all returned because of insufficient funds and the business owners were unable to contact the person who wrote them.

Last Saturday, Matthew James Turner, 26, turned himself into police. He faces nine counts of obtaining merchandise through false pretences and one of laundering proceeds of crime. Turner has been released on own recognizance with conditions.

the thing is i know what they are trying to do. their execution is bad. i think they are trying to teach in a different way, some people learn better with pictures, others with basic equations, but i think they would be better off teaching the old way, and augmenting with pictures and diagrams.
my kid still has a hard time with subtraction, because they have taught them to subtract the tens (or the hundreds) place first. before the ones? really? because a lot of times you need to borrow a ten, so how is that going to be easy? how did they teach them this stuff? by making them draw base-10 blocks. lines are tens, dots are ones, and squares are hundreds.

the problem when they were covering geometry was that he wanted to know the answers to the harder questions. one time, he had squares. he had to divide them into fourths. he did a vertical line in the middle, and diagonals inside the rectangles. his lines might not have been perfectly straight, but the idea was there, and he got marked wrong.
i check his corrected homework, and i always write a note and send it back if i think its right. he is a very bright boy.

they are supposed to be doing gifted and talented testing this month, im hoping he didnt miss it when he was out sick. i was G&T, but there is a science and technology school that we can put him into if hes "smart" enough. that would be so great for him. it would be great for him to learn coding so early, and they would challenge him, and he would be with other kids that need the same thing.
we will have to wait and see.
maybe i will have to show you some of the homework pages he comes home with.
hes looking at his kids anatomy book before school. yeap, thats my boy.

other than meeting my wife as a result, being designated "gifted" sucked for me. it just meant that when I got to high school I was thrown in with everyone else, but didn't know any of them because I had been bussed to a different school. then I just spent grade 9 bored while everyone else caught up.

might be different where you are though.

Our gifted class was a joke. It was just a way to make the teacher's kids even more of a snobby elite group. (Rural school and favourites) Didn't even do anything that was actually stimulating anyways.
When I moved to Oakville for two years, I had to play catch up to fit in and then when we moved back to the rural place, I was bored for a year. It was like the whole school was a year behind the Oakville school.
...and then highschool, drugs and booze kicked in and i cashed my brain in to be cool.

in first grade i was tagged as G&T. i got to do an extra poetry class. that was in virginia.
that was pretty much it until middle school, when i moved to new york. then, for 7th 8th grade i was in the accelerated "team" same 4 teachers for 7th and 8th, same classmates. competed in a math-a-thon. got a couple of awards. participated in NYSSMA (got an outstanding, BTW) got to go across state lines on a field trip to Liberty Science Center. got to see A Christmas Carol on Broadway. after reading Night we had a survivor of a concentration camp come in as a guest. when i was taking shop i almost got to try my hand at sandcasting, but i moved.

colorado offers little for the accelerated. a teacher of mine in high school was looking for students to assist, out here they label you "gifted and talented and at risk" i was the easy one, because i wasnt REALLY 'at risk'. we did a trust/ ropes course. that was about it.
    then AP english senior year.
i never fit in. i rarely made friends. so there was never a conflict for me with getting along with other kids, because i didnt. i just grew up fast, and accepted my spot, stuck waiting to attain an age of acceptance. still havent. people still dont llike to listen to me because im too young, i cant possibly have learned or experienced, or suffered enough to form a decent opinion.

thats why i love you guys. you dont care than im under 30. i can be more honest and thoughtful here than anywhere else. i certainly cant tell people i know in real life the things i think. i have few enough friends, shouldnt chase them away. so i zip it, and ignore that im still not ever going to fit in. except here, and in my own mind.
i did a lot of my learning on my own. read a lot of books. and with the internet, i can learn anything i want, it right at my fingertips. last night i watched several shows about the development of medicine (Pain, Pus, and Poison, on youtube) its right here, on my computer, in my house, and i smoke and sit in my jammies, and i LEARN. they say that you form the most new connections before you are 27, and then it becomes harder to learn new things. i am always using and connecting the pathways in my brain. everything i think of is so interconnected that while a truly new topic might be beyond me to learn, i will be able to keep using the pathways ive built for a long time. ive really seen this at work in my mom, after a stroke (and in her case an anuerysm/stroke double whammy) people are left with holes, gaps in their pathways. so they try to think of something, they KNOW they know, but the path is washed out, so their brain searches for an alternate route, can i get to the answer via this other path, through this memory, through this link. i want everything in my brain to be linked up.

also, thinking and learning distracts me from my depression. it helps, a little.

    i ramble.

I read Night for a class this semester, actually went back over my notes on it last night. Interesting read... too depressing for me though. My prof specializes in studying genocide, I don't know how she can do that. I'd break.

i had to read Farewell to Manzanar for summer school (stupid english teacher didnt like my writing style, so she failed me, bitch) and it just blew my mind. Night was so viscerally moving, and painful. certainly wasnt easy to read, but then, a lot of good books make you think about uncomfortable things.

I know how your son feels. I was always smart in some areas of school but struggled with math so much. Like in 1st grade they sent me to the 5th grade science class so I would not get board but in high school I was still struggling with algebra and geometry. I always had trouble showing the work the way they wanted me to. But english and science always came easy for me.

I ended up in the gifted program but also had some learning disabilities. So I was always kind of judged to the "dumb" one in the group by the other kids. They had their own little clique that I was not a part of like most places in school.

So after last Oct's ending of a co-dependent enabling friendship, I've just now realized that I have lost my guinea pig sitter. That means going camping or road tripping isn't possible for more than one night.

Trying to figure out options. I've traveled with two guineas before but four who can't all be in the same cage, would be a nightmare. My bff is who we'll be mostly camping with, so she can't do it. My other friend is always home but has no vehicle to stop by here and too many cats and dogs in her own house to take them over there.

Wonder if they have guinea pig boarding houses.

Maybe you could find a pet sitter. I would even try those who do dogs and cats and see if they would come in once a day and feed and water them. I do know of a couple kennels in our area who will board pocket pets so there might be some in your area too.

an automatic watering system would cover that for a few days, but they would probably chew through one of the timed release food bowls. maybe you could find one made of metal.
