Has anybody noticed that the poll results for this thread conform to an almost perfect Bell Curve?

I tend to believe what you are calling utopia falls far short of the definition of utopia, even as applied to your individual being. We each often have moments of satisfaction in our lives, but I doubt that anyone lives their life without any complaints or disappointments. The best we might achieve is to find happiness in what we have no matter how little or how much. Therefore, utopia has no single universally acceptable definition, leaving it to the individual to accomplish or perpetually search for a means of achieving.
I agree that it is something that one has to define and accept in their own mind as adequate.

Ummmm, yea, maybe. The Problem with looking outside of oneself is a basic human trait, habituation. The bike looks really good when I first get it, but after a while I habituate and start searching for something else, which means if I find Utopia today, it won't be Utopia next year.

The reason that the idea of Utopia is so attractive is people think a place can provide happiness, when, in reality, happiness is only a state of mind that is too easily interrupted by our desires.

Who said evolution was a quick and easy process ;)

Just because I toot one polar horn or the other doesn't mean I am not aware of what's going on.

I do believe at some point in here I compared "all men" (humankind in it's entirety), myself included, as a hormonal teenager.

History does repeat it self in a cyclical fashion and through every cycle we evolve and grow smarter and stronger.

(I read a good book on this topic and if you'd all like the authors were interviewed on you tube ... I recommend you all check it out)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXcDiGpVtbc"]YouTube - Neil Howe and William Strauss on The Fourth Turning in 1997 CSpan

The problem is, this time, in our present cycle through history, I believe that the crises that snaps us out of our present state of social descent and disintegration is going to HAVE to be very drastic.

***LOL*** Wake up people there is one ungodly pile of zombified cell phone junkies out there.

Nuclear War, sadly, is a possibility. as if we don't do enough to destroy our planet. The fact is that Achmadenijad (or wtvr, that Iranian dude) might actually be insane enough to fire a nuke. However it is not inevitable it is within us all to prevent it

one or two nukes does not an armageddon make

keeping israel from responding might be a start, but even then there is hope for limiting the thing

i wonder if pakistan would support iran - i have my doubts

sadly the christophrenics in the u$ will be unable to restrain their glee once it gets started, and then all hell will break loose

A limited nuclear exchange is likely. Tactical nuclear weapons will more than likely be used in any major war between nations, e.g. another Korean war, a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, another major Arab-Israeli war.

Nuclear weaponry has usage both as a deterrent and a determinant. The situation at hand determines which way they should be used. If they are, in the future, put to use the question is will one or both sides put them to use, and will others join in as well? Perhaps it could create a situation of not letting a real crisis go to waste, giving an otherwise weak, but nuclear armed nation an opportunity to prevail over much stronger opponents.

It has to be inevitable. Terrorists don't want nucular weapons just to sit and stare at them.

They have to get them first. That isn't inevitable. It's a possibility.

Aside from the rhetoric from the Bush Administration, what evidence exists that terrorists are trying to get their hands on such weapons, or for that matter, that they even want them?

President Obama: Al Qaeda Is Seeking a Nuke -- and They Will Use It

On the eve of his Nuclear Security Summit, President Obama issued a dire warning: terrorist groups are trying to obtain nuclear weapons -- and they will use it.
“We know that organizations like al Qaeda are in the process of trying to secure a nuclear weapon -- a weapon of mass destruction that they have no compunction at using," the president said.
Appearing alongside President Zuma of South Africa before a bilateral meeting, Mr. Obama said that "if there was ever a detonation in New York City, or London, or Johannesburg, the ramifications economically, politically, and from a security perspective would be devastating.”
Leaders from almost 50 nations are attending the two-day summit, aimed at shoring up efforts to obtain loose nuclear materials throughout the world so they don’t fall into the hands of terrorists or rogue nations. The summit is the third event in the last week in which President Obama is trying to demonstrate a commitment to denuclearization. Last week he issued a new policy on nuclear deterrence and signed a disarmament treaty with Russian President Dmitri Medvedev.
South Africa is the only nation in the world that once had a nuclear weapons program and subsequently dismantled the weapons.
"South Africa has special standing in being a moral leader on this issue," President Obama said.

The smart enemy of the U.S. would just sit back and wait on Americans to kill each other off. It would appear that Americans worst enemies are other Americans.
