Is it wrong to emphasize how much smarter you are than others?

I have no problem with the way most people act on here, but there are a lot of misunderstanding based on the limitations of the web, sadly. Most of us would probably get along in real life, to some extent, even if there are some sore feelings on here from time to time. I've pissed off my fair share of people and quite a few have ticked me off.

We have a lot to learn from each other so if someone is really knowledgeable in a subject, I see no problem in them stepping forward as long as they are not arrogant. I mean, sometimes you kind of have to emphasize your expertise in a particular field, if the topic comes up, to help with your argument. And similar types of situations as well.



You don't need to be a genius to know how to spell.

I saw this topic and had to comment. When I finished high school, I joined Mensa, which is an organization supposedly for the top 2% of IQ's in the population. I qualified based on my college entrance exam scores (I don't know if they still accept these, but at the time (late 1970's), they did). Anyhow, I found many of their publications to be a bit snobbish about intelligence. I went along with it although it wasn't really me. The final straw was when I received a catalog of Mensa items I could order. One item was a t-shirt which boldly stated "98% Proof" on the front and had the Mensa logo. My feeling was that this shirt confirmed my concern that Mensa looked down on the majority of the population. At that point, I realized this elitest organization was all about making eccentric, intellectual snobs feel good about themselves at the expense of others. Note that I'm not saying that all smart people are eccentric snobs, but I felt that those at the helm of Mensa had that attitude. I have lots of smart friends who are very down-to-earth, real people. Anyhow, after seeing that t-shirt, I resigned.

Anyhow, I think it's grossly wrong to emphasize "how much smarter you THINK you are." I have plenty of academic credentials I could crow about. Over the years I've found I can learn something from anybody - whether it's fly-fishing technique, car repair, quilting, cooking, you name it. If nothing else, education should make one aware of how much they DON'T know, not how much they think they know. I rarely if ever talk degrees, certifications, etc. I find it often makes people defensive, aggressive ("I'll show you I'm as good or better than you"), or angry ("you had life handed to you" - which isn't the reality at all. I came from a mid-to-lower middle class upbringing. I did well in high school and got a partial scholarship (not entitlements or grants) to a state university. That led to stipends for grad school. My bloodline did nothing for me other than instill a work ethic).

I dunno Rat, Perhaps it is unfair to say you think you are smarter, and it is just frustration. I have seen some frustration in you...but you express it in a rather rude manner. You CAN inform somebody or remind them of the actual facts, in a friendly manner, unlike you did in that Chemo' thread. In that you were rude and even slightly obnoxious.

You do tend to use the same kinda phrases:"People should do the research" : "This is not commonly know"...etc. I've even thought about collecting a dozen of them, and throwing them back at you...but then thought: "Fuck it"...
You have a myriad of patronising phrases that you pepper most of your posts with. It is difficult to wade through your posts sometimes, because I just think: "You friggin' ass...please stop filling your posts with patronising phrases."

The other thing I have noticed is you have copied and pasted info that is out of date, or irrelevant...passing it off as you own words.
I called you on it once, but I have noticed it before...(I thought I'd save your blushes.)

I think you should cool it on hectoring people to do their research...either leave them be or just remind them in a friendly way. Like I said, It is possible.
Also, don't talk down to people as if you suddenly think you know more than somebody - like your some kinda expert.
That IS thinking you are smarter or atleast more informed...when a lot of the time you are not.

Your behaviour has got worse recently...why ? Insecurities ... Being a bit of a dick? Who knows? Only YOU.

JY, this is spot on with what i would say i am like. to be honest i find that being to knowledgable about a subject can alienate. This tends to be more with people my own age than my elders who usually are more accepting if i have some knowledge to offer, as they have a lot more than i ever will i expect and i can chat to them, showing what i know and learning from them but with people my own age i tend to dumb myself down.....just to keep the peace a lot of the time. for some reason knowing to much can be percieved as a threat, at least to the people i know and work with around my age. i realise i probably shouldn't care about there perceptions of me, but i have to work with these people, so i keep it simple for them.

Yep, that right there is one of the main reasons that I don't give a fuck if PR is talking the truth. If I wanted to listen, not even talk, just listen to someone as condescending as that I'd probably go get myself checked in at the local mental asylum. Seriously.

It's a 'holier than thou' attitude I get from every single 'enlightened' or 'non-sheeple' person on this site. Makes me want to scream.
