Here's a story from today's news. Looks like the Brits & Yanks are gearing up another war for sure!!! Will the people LET THEM do it again? Source: http://www.news24.com/News24/World/News/0,,2-10-1462_1563700,00.html London - Iran is just "months away" from being able to enrich uranium for a nuclear bomb, Britain's The Times newspaper reported on Tuesday, quoting Western diplomatic sources. "Iran appears to be further advanced in acquiring the relevant nuclear technology than we had initially thought," a British official told the newspaper. Teheran had bought time through appearing to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency and with a diplomatic initiative led by Britain, France and Germany, the report said. But officials now believed the situation was "grave", it added. "Actually they have just continued with the research work and now they are only a few months away from completing the programme," a source told The Times. Iran is a signatory of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty but is allowed to develop nuclear technology for civilian purposes. US President George Bush has named Iran as part of the "axis of evil" and accused Tehran of wanting to develop nuclear weapons. Officials told the Times the IAEA was monitoring Iran closely, and that the country could be referred to the United Nations Security Council in coming months. Teheran had chosen to use centrifuge technology to enrich uranium for making a bomb, rather than extracting plutonium from used fuel from a reactor under construction at Bushehr with assistance from Russia. "Even if they complete the centrifuge technology, it would still take time to spin the material through the system and to make a bomb," a source told the Times. The Times reported recently that Israel would mount a military attack to destroy Iranian nuclear facilities if it thought Teheran was close to having a bomb. Israel took action against Iraq in June 1981, destroying the French-built Osirak nuclear reactor in an air raid.
I don't think its very likely skip, at least in the short term, and certainly not before the US elections in November. The war in Iraq was a war for resources (oil) and it took place because of, perhaps, clever timing of hawks seeing a long term gain. A War with Iran wouldn't be startegically pragmatic, we don't have the resources right now, and lets face it, the war in Iraq wasn't about WMD's. So far all I've heard is bush downplaying Irans nuclear capabilitys.
Also because of the Ayatollah, and Irans more influential status in the Arab world, I don't think anything could happen in Iran without triggering a holy war. I might be wrong, but I dont think the hawks want that.
Yes, the hawks DO want a holy war. That's what this is about. And don't worry about our "boys" having to go over there and do the dirty work. The Israelis will bomb the shit out their nuclear facilities, the US will take out their military installations with all those new missles they ordered, received but haven't used yet. The small question is how many missiles can Iran get off the ground before they're destroyed... Then the big question is, will the Islamic world unite or fall apart after the attack on Iran...
they'd unite, of course! who's up for buying stock in aspirin and antacids? however, i don't think that the us will actually attack a country with nuclear capabilities. we'd go for the weaker ones.
That's the point isn't it? Leave it a while and Iran may be the next nuclear power, they would be foolish to attack them once they have the chance to start a nuclear war in the region. If they're going to attack Iran, it'll have to be soon. I don't think it's likely. They would need to justify any such action to the public, and after Iraq that's going to be very tricky. There would also be a diplomatic buildup before even cruise missiles were sent in to destroy Iran's nuclear capabilities, and we haven't seen any such noises yet. Give Bush a second term and it might happen in the next year or two... yet another reason to get the ignorant arse's hand off the trigger...
I don't think the U.S. would do anything to encourage Isreal to get involved bombing Iran. From what I understand, it took a lot of effort keeping them out of the Desert Storm when Iraq fired their Scuds into Isreal. I would tend to believe the U.S. would do anything to keep Isreal out any war with an Islamic country. Isreal involvement in any conflict would unite the Arab/Islamic world against the West. This is the reason Sadam Hussein launched several Scud missles at Isreal, attempting to draw them into the war. Desert Storm was about the only time Isreal relied on a third party for their defense. It doesn't mean Israel wouldn't act on its own. They did in the late 70's when they attacked and bombed an Iraqi nuclear facility capable of produce weapons grade nuclear material. A side note...one of the pilots in the attack was one of the 7 killed in the Columbia shuttle breakup over Texas 18 months ago.
The thing that kind of scares me is the fact that FOX News has already been "hinting" around that Iran will have nuclear weapons VERY soon. This makes me think that they're doing this in hopes of drawing support for a future war with Iran from all the Republican hawks who watch the network. Just a guess though...
Hopefully they will fall apart. Possably it will make life a little easier for us hawks and you chickens.
After several experiments I have conducted, I have come to the conclusion that "Real" (wtf?) Americans write the word "possibly" as "possably". Sample number 1:
Yeah, I am sure you have never made a typo or spelling error. Get a life. The point came accros just fine.
