I think this is so cool. Good luck to you! I'd be interested in joining your group, but not in Alaska. I'm a real wuss about winter ...

I also think about stuff like the length of the growing season. You gotta have a garden, cause you can't live 100% on moose meat. And the growing season up there is so short, there's very little margin for error.

I need to leave the world. I'm more and more these day's realizing how messed up this world is in society. I have read into the wild about a million times just because I have felt this way all my life growing up. but I want to be with a friend I can really enjoy. all my friends at where I live like their normalized life's though. doesn't bother me, but I need this. or, I'll end up ending my road that has been full of losing the loved, and loving the lost and never forgiving yourself. I need to get out in the real world and forgive me and follow my heart..
I have been camping all my life so I'm very experienced. if you are interested in the vision
the email me, I will go anywhere 600 milies off the Atlantic coast and possibly further.
    peace and love,
    Charlie

google "Alone in the wilderness" a gentleman years ago did just this in Alaska.. granted, as a fellow Arizonan, I would freeze my butt off up there, but it is doable, and you can grow supplemental foods :)

Canada IS part of North America :) just out of the US

have spent time in BC, and think it would do very well as a home base. not too cold due to the oceans influence, ground seemed quite fertile, and property values werent too bad last I checked

I suppose that theoretically it's doable, but my sense is that it's far more difficult than those who try it could imagine. I've read that almost everyone who goes into the Alaskan bush eventually comes back to civilization, usually sooner than later, although of course we wouldn't hear about the ones who didn't come back, assuming there are any.

You would need to grow more than "supplemental" food. Your garden needs to supply the majority of your diet. You can't live 100% on meat for long, and gardens are problematic in the far north. You need to be able to survive until your first harvest is in, and if the marginal soil and rodents etc. don't get the garden, the short growing season might. There is very little margin for error.

And then there's the question of exactly how much of civilization do you embrace? Do you allow a snowmobile? What about a chain saw? If "no" to both of those, have fun cutting and hauling a couple dozen cords of firewood by hand. Running out of firewood means certain death in winter. And that doesn't even consider the issue of making sure you don't run out of gasoline.

And this is not to mention non-tangible things ... for instance, what will you do to pass the time on those long, dark winter nights when the temperature dips to 40 or 50 below?

I still think the idea of doing this is very intrigueing. But I also think it's near-impossible for most people.

and I think your right :) doable and comfortable are two totally different things!! especially trying to do without all the entertainments and amusements we get used to through the years.. I would have a hard time without some sort of computing ability, but I 'could' survive...
