since montanans leave their truck engines running while shopping they will be unfairly undertaxed

on the other hand, some of them will drive 200 miles to save $5 at the costco . . .

Some clowns here have gotten enough signitures on a petition to put a measure on the next ballot that would eliminate property taxes and make the state legislature find other ways to pay for roads, schools, ect...I doubt this would pass but if it did I can see that as a way to generate money for roads. And I would prefer it over privatiazation of the roads. Now you need to remember as vehicals get more efficent that brings in less gas tax money for roads but the costs of repairs and upkeep keeps going up.

^^^ i hope not because we'll be next, property taxes drive people crazy here too

yet every winter you have the humorous spectacle of those who brag about paying something like $5 less a month because they live "out in the country" [as opposed to in-town] bitching about no one plowing the roads . . . .

Its a good plan for city people. It's a bad idea for those who don't have public transportation available. So many cities and especially small towns and rural areas have no public transportation. This tax may really hurt some people. I used to ride a bike or take a bus in the city. Many times I didn't own a car and was in great shape and saved money. Most all of the railways have been converted to walking trails. Traveled all over the east coast taking trains. Trains are so much more efficient then trucking or driving interstates.

That's a good one. We shouldn't drive wherever want to whenever we want to. The thought police on the other hand shouldn't exist, and our freedom should be curtailed from doing nothing about nothing. If you don't idol you might not make it in time for the local community meeting of justice minded citizens.:)
