All things appear and disappear because of the concurrence of causes and conditions. Nothing ever exists entirely alone; everything is in relation to everything else. -------------------------------------- The foot feels the foot when it feels the ground. -------------------------------------- He who experiences the unity of life sees his own Self in all beings, and all beings in his own Self, and looks on everything with an impartial eye. -------------------------------------- In the sky, there is no distinction of east and west; people create distinctions out of their own minds and then believe them to be true. -------------------------------------- The world, indeed, is like a dream and the treasures of the world are an alluring mirage! Like the apparent distances in a picture, things have no reality in themselves, but they are like heat haze. -------------------------------------- Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense. Buddha
"Knowing others is intelligent Knowing yourself is enlightened Tzu chih che ming Conquoring others takes force Conquoring yourself is true strength Knowing what is enough is wealth Forging ahead shows inner resolve Hold your ground and you will last long Die without perishing and your life will endure. When one lacks discrimination And his mind is undisciplined, the senses Run hither and thither like wild horses. But they obey the rein like trained horses When one has discrimination and has made The mind one-pointed. Those who lack Discrimination, with little control Over their thoughts and far from pure, Reach not the pure state of immortality But wander from death to death; but those Who have discrimination, with a still mind And a pure heart, reach journey's end, Never again to fall into the jaws of death. With a discriminating intellect As charioteer and a trained mind as reins, They attain the supreme goal of life To be united with the Lord of Love. -Katha Upanishad
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to throw away stones and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. -Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
Well have you renounced these passing pleasures So dear to the senses, Nachiketa, And turned your back on the way of the world Which makes mankind forget the goal of life. Far apart are wisdom and ignorance. The first leads one to Self-realization; The second makes one more and more Estranged from his real Self. I regard you, Nachiketa, worthy of instruction, For passing pleasures tempt you not at all. -Katha Upanishad
A friend had borrowed my Gita...and returned it to me today...and as I went to put it on the bookshelf before going to sleep, I felt the sudden urge to open it...and this is what caught my eye: "And he shall soon become pure and reach everlasting peace. For this is my world of promise, that he who loves me shall not perish"- Bhagavad-Gita 9:31 May you enjoy its beautiful comfort. Good night, my friends.
Yesterday, I lived bewildered, In illusion. But now I am awake, Flawless and serene, Beyond the world. From my light The body and the world arise. So all things are mine, Or nothing is. -Ashtavakra Gita
The Moment of Magic by Victoria Safford (A Unitarian Universalist Meditation) Now is the moment of magic, when the whole, round earth turns again toward the sun, and here's a blessing: the days will be longer and brighter now, even before the winter settles in to chill us. Now is the moment of magic, when people beaten down and broken, with nothing left but misery and candles and their own clear voices, kindle tiny lights and whisper secret music, and here's a blessing: the dark universe is suddenly illuminated by the lights of the menorah, suddenly ablaze with the lights of the kinara, and the whole world is glad and loud with winter singing. Now is the moment of magic, when an eastern star beckons the ignorant toward an unknown goal, and here's a blessing: they find nothing in the end but an ordinary baby, born at midnight, born in poverty, and the baby's cry, like bells ringing, makes people wonder as they wander through their lives, what human love might really look like, sound like, feel like. Now is the moment of magic, and here's a blessing: we already possess all the gifts we need; we've already received our presents: ears to hear music, eyes to behold lights, hands to build true peace on earth and to hold each other tight in love.
Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. - 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
Whatever you are doing, seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, eating, or saying, realize your essential nature as pure Consciousness. This is the way to liberation. -Maharamayana
"For this is why we are born: People, all people belong to each other, and he who shuts himself away diminishes himself, and he who shuts another away from him destroys himself."- Dr. Howard Thurman
The Self is hidden in the lotus of the heart. Those who see themselves in all the creatures go day by day into the world of Brahman hidden in the heart. Established in peace, they rise above body consciousness to the supreme light of the Self. Immortal, free from fear, this Self is Brahman, called the True. Beyond the mortal and the immortal, he binds both worlds together. Those who know this live day after day in heaven in this very life. -Chandogya Upanishad
