I am starting to think the point was to start an argument which I find Christians love to do rather then really convince peeps there is something good in it. Their church doesn't help them to become messengers. Some how it creates monsters.
I think you are going by clichés and stereotypes now. I can give examples on this forum of atheists that try to do the exact same thing. It does not say shit about their (a)religious affiliation by default, it is a generalisation. Perhaps in some countries there are more of a particular kind of annoying (a)theist then in another. Still.. it would be better to shit on this exact person's behaviour than to shit on the religion they claim to follow because of this particular person's behaviour, don't you think? For all you know ginalee could be a troll deliberatly trying to start pointless and repetitive arguments and is not christian at all. I for one can't take her religious jibberish serious really (and I try to take every sincere post seriously).
Cliche or experience in my case. I have never ran into a Christian who couldn't let go of the idea of making a new Christian out of you till they win, usually arguing in the end, and mix two of them from different churches and it's a war on your hands. That depends on what their separate leaders tell them to believe, had one of those wars right in my house and once voices were raised I shut it down. Here is my weirdest case scenario, my sister inlaw,,, her hubby finally turns her into a christain, they go to church together, eventually she finds out he is messing around with a woman at his work. They split up and part their things and he goes on with the new woman,,, she is Christian too. The new woman dies a short time later of cancer and the two of them, brother and sister inlaw are still single, now going to separate churches but pushing for new members. Sorry to say but she is a lovely woman and I love her. I just feel bad she still wishes she had her hubby but now they can't ever be together again, not only believing two different christianities but having seen the ruins of another woman entering their lives only to leave, they are both awesome people but why didn't their religion save them before that? Especially since he was a Christian long before she was. No all she has is her church. She bugs me often to become Christian, every time I see her and I decline gently but to no avail. She really wants this to happen.
Never? Really? That's unfortunate. I run into many christians that do not do such things. More than the annoying evangelizing kind.
Honestly, I never met a Catholic who tried so hard to convert me, not one. They seem to get into conversation only if they are asked and see interest.
What is hard to believe is that you said: you've never met a christian that didn't try to convert you/didn't try to start a religious argument. That is really extreme if I compare it to my and other peoples' experiences with christians in general and so I find that hard to believe.
And unlike a Christian I won't sit here and try to make you believe me. We all have our own experiences and that's what makes the world go round, would be good if all saw it that way.
I just have the feeling you are stigmatizing them in general because of the few bad examples you have experienced. I know for a fact you have met christians on this forum that didn't (and won't) bother you with evangelistic arguments So there's a big chance you've come across them irl as well!
This is what triggers me. It is basicly the same thing ginalee is doing. Some people counter her argument perhaps in a somewhat rude way. She states this is what all atheists do (but they do not all do that, as you know too), atheists react in angry and protesting ways.
We have a jesus right here in town. Seriously people here ask "have you seen Jesus around town yet?" and many can say yes. It's a homeless man wearing a white sheet with a fanny pack around his waist and long dark hair, riding a bike and when you are driving and he is coming toward you it's the weirdest looking thing you ever saw, looks like Jesus flowing toward you with the sheet flowing around his body, you can't really see the bike till he gets closer to you. The first time I was asked I thought it was a lunatic asking me, then I saw him one day and laughed ma ass off.
some of the atheists are anti-theists some of the time, but not all all the atheists are anti-theists all of the time
I am not going to really agree with that, atheists don't go up to people targeting religious or non religious conversations for no reason normally. They will engage but there are different levels of atheists we would be speaking about, sure some might really hate religion and might cause something like this thread or similar conversation to get the religious going but they don't stand on street corners or knock at doors trying to gain members into their society. They don't try to take peeps from their religious beliefs just to do it. They have no church with needs or a public to gain, usually they just get along with their beliefs as they see fit with no leader trying to encourage it in any certain way. The thread, Do Gods Exist,,, I haven't even read it nor do I intend to go into it because I have no proof either way about any of the actual gods likely being asked about. My only beef is religions using brainwash and or fear to gain members. You know many Non religious people (probably all classed as atheists) believe there is a god, they just don't follow anyone for any truth seeking because they probably go on hopes and their own goodwill to find him out he is there in the end. I have a personal connection with my god. He is probably yours too but no one has to lead me there and set me rules to live by. Some religions don't think that's good enough.
I can back up this statement, to an extent. My experience matches yours, mostly. I have probably met a Catholic who was interested in converting me, but I can't remember when. Christians are much more upfront about it. I think that Christians put more emphasis on that pure belief in God saving you from Hell, while Catholics tend to highlight the power of a virtuous life as the pash to salvation. Example: Christian: Even if you're homosexual, God will save you if you believe in him! Catholic: If you're homosexual, you'll be damned to hell! God knows what you do!
Hee hee, makes me wonder what the Mormons and Jehova's would say in the same sentence. I think the muslem side would chop stuff off, not trying to be funny but if I remember right they have a thing about that too. It would be nice if there was one good clean religion to believe in and I think the only one so far available is your own. You live right, take care of your family and neighbors and don't harm anyone. That's my motto.
Is that disgust and loathing talking? Disdain and hatred? So it's okay for you to be annoyed by Christians because of Christianity, but do people like me have less of a reason to be annoyed? Am I expected to "STFU" and be submissive to prevailing social dominance of religious hatred? Hatred isn't coexistence and it certainly isn't Peace. Peace is a PRIME RELIGIOUS IDEAL and the opposite of Peace is war. There is a very real societal hatred and loathing and fighting against the Church. That's personal. People don't know what what they're hating and fighting against. Here is a Servant of God. Her name is Dorothy Day. I have slept in Dorothy's house and I have eaten in Dorothy's kitchen. Thank GOD for Dorothy Day. Now, either people will take the time to consider a view that is nearly foreign to them or they'll be REACTIONARY and will keep their ears and eyes closed. If people have chosen hatred and prejudice, then that is their choice. As I have said many times throughout this thread, not all atheists are the same. There is a difference between somebody who believes that God is non-existent .. and somebody who is engaged in spiritual war.
I happen to know plenty of Christians who never try to convert me and I've never heard them try to convert anyone else. In fact, my wife was friends with and worked with a very nice lady who happened to be a pastors wife. But she didn't even know that until they had worked together for over 4 months. So I don't think all Christians are like that at all. But there are some who say they are trying to convert people but are happy to just make sure everyone hears what they have to say regardless of their success rate in converting people. They're looking for a conflict and once in a while I will give them one but mostly I just try to ignore them.
