It is to be used when referring to someone who consciously has prejudice against a group of people because of their skin color. This is one kind of racism. Then there is the UNCONSCIOUS racism that happens not because we as individuals actually believe that one group is inherintly superior to another, not because we don't see all humans as equal, but because we have ideas that have been put in our head by society...can you see the difference?? No, I am not uncomfortable around black people. Most of my best friends are black, but that has to do with where I live more than anything. But I certainly do have certain prejudice that I have learned, and Im not afraid to admit that. Maybe our disagreement is just based on semantics. By your standards, 90 some percent of the world would be classified as racist. I just like to be a little more discriminating with regards to who I would attach that label to. But anyway, the points I was trying to make had nothing to do with who and who not to label racist. Maybe you should re-read what I've written.
i totally get what you are saying, and to a certain extent i do think you are right. but if you live in the real world all sort of racial hang-ups tend to dissapear. i live in the hood and i KNOW that i am just as likely to be mugged or raped by a white man than a black man. so when i see a black man coming, im not like "oh shit! i better watch my back" like some, more sheltered people would. i do think that some people are more comfortable around people of their own race, but that goes for blacks as well and people of all races for that matter. but people misconceptions about racism is what i think fosters this kind of behavior. ahh im trying to think of a way to explain it. like as you said, theres some rich white man tryin to give a job interveiw to a black man. he is more nervous about the interveiw not going well than he would if it were a white man because he doesnt want to be labeled facist or racist or whatever for not giving him the job. this sort of discomfort would be akward to say the least, to both people but in places where there is crazy ethnic diversity you dont see much of that at all. at least i dont. read my original post
