this is easily understandable, but this isn't the general definition these days. the suffix -ance can indicate a state/condition, or and action. (ignorance is a condition, defiance is the act of defying)

the suffix -ant can often turn the word into an adjective, indicating that the noun affected by said adjective is either in that state or condition, or performing such an act.

ignorance, when broken down into the root and suffix, would be the condition or act of ignoring.

in a theological sense this is still the definition (but refers to ignorance of god rather than ignorance of earthly knowledge), and it likely is the original definition. some dictionaries will offer it as an alternate definition of the word, but in general the current definition is a lack of knowledge, education, information or learning, regardless of the reason for said deficit. ignorance, by this definition, can occur through no fault of the ignorant, or can be a willful decision to avoid knowledge of certain topics.

i don't understand the simultaneously anti-intellectual and anti-ignorance sentiments that seem to be widespread and common these days. someone who doesn't know as much is looked down upon, yet someone else can be too smart. not living in europe i can't vouch for how pervasive anti-intellectualism is there, but in north america it's pretty common.

this is true, and insightful. truly unintelligent people often grate on my nerves pretty badly, but then again some really endear themselves to me. it depends on a lot of things, i guess. but again, stupidity and ignorance are different. ignorance rarely bothers me unless its ignorance of some vital fact regarding your well being or livelihood when that information is common and easily acquired (pregnant women shouldnt get drunk or smoke half a pack a day, people in dangerous jobs should use protective equipment appropriate for the job)

for me it depends. choosing not to know about the important stuff, like i mentioned above, is one thing. choosing not to know about politics or sports or celebrities or high art or whatever else...to each his own. i don't educate myself about sports because i don't care and it doesn't matter. i'm willfuly ignorant on that subject. i don't think this is a big deal.

of course everyone will have a different idea of what is or isn't important. many would argue politics and current events are important to educate yourself about, but i'm skeptical of this claim.

anyway, i don't think willful ignorance is a big deal in many cases because gaining knowledge simply for the sake of possessing knowledge strikes me as vain and kind of silly. it could be a good passtime if you enjoy it, but i don't understand the superiority complex so many people get by holding so much information. and its not as if anybody can absorb the entire body of knowledge of even their own culture, let alone the world, so i see no point in the endless pursuit of unnecessary learning. it is only ignorance of the truly important things that bothers me.

much more annoying than ignorance is an inability to use any sense, reason, or logic.

yes, ignorance annoys me. whether it is intentional or not. i'm not a very patient person and i feel that everyone should already know everything i do.

yeah, we all know what fucking dumbasses people who don't live in the city always are...

it turns out that ignorance of the definition of ignorance is funny.

This was my first thought as well when I read the first post...

The 'masses' or 'sheeple' (for the fans of those words ;) ), just want everyone to be the same.

It isn't work your way up, it's tear down those that are higher.

I don't get it. I was talking there using my definition of ignorance. Anti-intellectualism though, in schools I see it. Don't want to be a bod, a nerd or a geek, afterall. At my mum’s job her bosses think badly of people with degrees etc. In England at least it’s probably fairly common. But I really don’t know.

Here’s the thing, I’m not thinking about in the ‘real world’ etc. I’m thinking about in School still. I’m thinking when someone turns around and actually says no, I don’t want to learn. I’m going to sit here and do F all because I can. That annoys me. I would treat someone who doesn't know differently to someone who doesn't want to know. And I would feel bad about getting angry at unintelligent people because I'm only like this because of my upbringing and my parents genes. It could've quite easily been me there, and then that's far too close to being shallow than I'd like.

Opel actually mentioned the celebrity thing like you did and I agree, different people have different priorities. I don’t expect everyone to want to know everything, it just annoys me when people have resources and things in front of them, for free, to turn around and just say they don’t care. And the most annoying thing about it is you know that in a few months time they’ll be complaining about how no one ever teaches them because they did.

And last thing, logic is fun to play with. 1 is a number, 2 is a number therefore 1 = 2. Someone then said to me, 1 and 2 are not numbers. They are representational of numbers so it doesn't work. :D I still found it funny.

If we're all ignorant, we're all racist, we're all sexist, etc...what's the purpose of the terms' existence?

The words are meant for the extreme cases beyond what the average person exhibits. Very different.

trust me, we're all ignorant. Ignorant to others' cultures, motivations, perspectives, their upbringing and prior experiences, so on and so forth. some less aware than others. but you're ignorant too.
The purpose of the term's existence is to represent in a word the fact that we do not have knowledge of everything.

you're missing my point completely. in no way I am denying that everyone exhibits some form of ignorance. it's a human characteristic.

since we never know what others are thinking exactly, we go by what we perceive of them via our senses. generally, we label an ignorant person as someone who comes across as offensive in some way, by demonstrating a lack of knowledge or consideration for something. of course, it's subjective.

i roll my eyes when people give responses like "we're all ___" and nothing more. pet peeve. it seems more of justification. we as humans can always try to control our "flaws," as to how they are perceived and some of us do so more than others.

you are defining the word in one way - extreme cases only. i am not. i am making my own point. i am not trying to vouch for yours.

"we're all hypocritical." i like to discuss terminology--public use versus intended meaning. don't take it personally.

btw, are you also the type of person who writes down "human" when official documents ask for "race?"
