Somewhere around 90% of Western atheists find that organized religion is a harmful institution, as they've seen numerous examples of religion, particularly Christianity and Islam causing major harm to the world, science, and knowledge in general.
As well as being used as an excuse for expansionism and conquering.

You might's well ask why gays bother so much with Repbulicans.

The most classical example is Buddhism, but it would be easy to quickly think of 100 functioning models.

A lot of people use the word religion to describe belief in the supernatural which would make the argument rightfully Naturalism vs Religion. After all, the question that follows "so...you don't believe in god?" is usually "So how do you think the world got here?"....and for reasons unknown, a suspension of the natural order, something that completely abolishes coherent inquiry, is the answer.

Most people who say Atheist are actually talking about Naturalism, and it is a problem.

A quick search "What do atheists believe when you die" came up with
"You decay and become NUTRIENTS. YAYYY NUTRIENTS!"

Its a laymen explanation that I technically agree with. Its not representative of Atheism because the only thing Atheism represents is the rejection of the god idea. Nor is it sensitive to the ideals of the religious state of mind, especially those that see the human race as "imperfect". Its a kind of self depreciating prejudice really. The idea that we are GREATER than a rock because we can think and examine our surroundings isn't something I've seen in a book, buts its definitely something that's been insinuated. And god is supposedly greater than that?

Its like existential hazing, and god is the only one in the fraternity.

I'm an atheist who thinks it's good that some people believe in God and go to church. One of my best friends is a devout Catholic and considering the priesthood.

In my relationships, I rather not entertain "argument" about God. Believe what you believe in, I believe in what I believe in. And if we can agree to disagree, there's no reason why you shouldn't be my friend in other areas of life.

Is that good enough for you, OP? That being said, I think religious people are kind of dumb...too bad I owe them so much money. :(

I think it can be good. I've considered going back to my former church to volunteer (so I'm not so lazy); and my mum's pastor is a wonderful woman that teaches love and acceptance that would've got her murdered in Biblical times, and my grandfather founded and led a chapter of AA.

But I certainly prefer more realistic forms of hope/faith; and find organized religion to be extremely dangerous and used more for a tool of evil, than anything else.

Ummm, while I might agree with the first part of your post, the gay/republican tie-in seems to be a non-sequitur??????.

Thanks for your view on that. I once asked a professor in a world religions
class why Bhuddism and Taoism were'nt included in the curriculum and was told they didn't fit the criteria to be called religions, they were philosophy's.

I used to call myself an Atheist and would constantly get in these circular arguments with people until I realized it was always just a complete disagreement of definition. The mere utterance of the word and Christians would think I was the fucking devil and many "Agnostics" instantly believed I was in the "Religion of rejecting belief"...

Now that I'm a Dudeist Priest, I can just say "yeah I'm religious" or just say "fuck it" and abide...
...fight the ocean and you will drown, brother... :mickey:

Sciences are specialized vocabularies and they are redundant. By redundant I mean rising and falling as in a wave, undulating.

Specialization is the greatest argument against truth wherein exception or exemption rules.

    Solution is equal dispersal.

^ how about the Western-world Christians (particularly Americans) lobbying for, and funding the political parties that push for the Death Penalty for African gays?

Uganda homosexuals would be getting executed right now if it wasn't for liberal reporters and protesters across the world.
Sudan homosexuals aren't so lucky. They are stoned, and the possible future president of South Sudan, has made it clear that if they form their own state, it will keep this policy. Areas where, like pre-Christianity Europe, once embraced the bisexuality of man (and woman).
    Or Somaliland, or Mauritania.

These laws have all come within the last 30 years, under the Islamic leaders of Africa. And reform in these countries (and the ones that have reformed) is often opposed by wealthy American Christians through (sometimes major) campaign support.

    No deity(s)
...although I have notice, some sects of Buddhism and Taoism seem to border on a dogmatic deity-like worship... I suppose then they would probably qualify as religions.

I don't think I should have to explain how and why faith functions....

I'm just confused as to why you think its good they go to church and believe in god, and I am confident you don't know either.

Its a different kind of 'believing' when someone concedes that women should
be allowed equal rights, slavery is not okay, you shouldn't behead homosexuals....basically agreeing to disagree like you said.

But why people would want to masquerade around as those who entertain the exact opposite of the above is beyond me.

Its like claiming to be a member of the KKK and accepting none of its defining attributes. I met a guy who said he was an Atheist Christian Buddhist druid... I mean what the fuck....
