jesus people you can still watch tv and think for youself. The television is strictly entertainment. It's all fake most people realize this. If not then, your a dumbass. I think that parents shouldnt use television as a babysitter. But when you are older, it's alright. I don't watch a lot of it, I tend to read. But I have no problem with the fact that most people do. I wouldnt try to change people either.
Yeah, exactly. It would be bad to take tv to heart or watch it constantly but there are educational shows on the tv.... I watch a lot of the history channel myself. But even the brainless, mindless shows.... to just zone out now and then doesn't mean you don't do anything else. It's just entertainment and of course, anything is bad if you do too much of it.
I think its funny and truely hypocritical when people get on the net to tell you the tv is so bad...... and the internet is SOOOOOO much better. take it to the streets, if you even lived by that, you wouldnt be online posting about it.
If I turned off the television causing my garden to magically de-weed itself I could get excited .... if it wasnt just a figure of speech you'd have something.
Why are you trying to get everyone to conform to what you want. You are one sick sick puppy. You need to just start being such a puss bag, and not allow everything you see to sway your opinions. Are you that weak of a person? You have to attempt to go and instill all of your beliefs on others, when they are quite obviously fatally flawed. If you were as smart, or enlightened, as you believe, you wouldnt be telling anyone what is or what isnt, youd be presenting ideas. Without coming off as a left wing pyscho.
TV teaches conformity and competition. Why am I not surprised to find it here? I hear the hypnotic drone between the lines… Conform…compete…consume…breed… Conform…compete…consume…breed… Conform…compete…consume…breed… An ad hominem attack is a logical fallacy describing the attempt to discredit an argument by merely attacking the credibility of the arguer.
i like tv. i went without it for about two years. kinda missed it. just got it recently and when picking out the channels we wanted all i picked out were learning channels. discovery and history are my fave channels. and when nothing decent is on, so what if i tune in and watch a mindless sitcom? its entertainment. having said that... i find most of the shows on network television to be ridiculous. reality shows and all these hip new c.s.i shows. its disgusting what they show at like 7pm at night. my kids will not be given free rein of a tv that is for sure! tv is not the only way 'the powers that be' try to control us. if we say that tv corrupts and we shouldnt watch it... what else shouldnt we do? while some of the population are simple and will gobble up all the nonsense spewed from a talking head, please give the rest of us credit! not everyone believes what they are spoon fed. also watching tv has helped my bullshit detector. research some of what you are hearing on the news. bbc is a good one to watch, but a huge part of the media is owned and what is shown on them is monitored and controlled. im babblin now, but i think you get my point. dont assume that ppl who watch tv are mindless drones.
Who the hell is competing, other then you? I simply stated that there are educational things on tv and it's not so bad to watch other things on tv at times.... I said I do that and I also spent time trying to make the world a better place. I think I am generally intelligent to think for myself and not let everything I see on tv effect me.
HeadBasher Yes…indeed...the educational thingy…arts…science… information...truly a profoundly magical and entertaining medium. I do NOT dispute that assertion. The programmers may be fools but they are not idiots. TV programming is like a beautiful pearl necklace. The pearls are the good stuff. But who can see the string that holds it all together? Who can hear the hypnotic programmers chant… conform, compete, consume, breed? I hear it plainly. No, my rant is that a typical viewer has been sufficiently brainwash with subliminal programming that they cannot consider any thought that does not conform to their own mindset. If it doesn’t conform then they attack…king of the hill stuff. Check this thread out. See for yourself. But hey...the shit slingers come with the territory. I’m a gardener…I compost it. I’m not trying to raise the dead here. I’m looking for my brothers and sisters that are asleep at the wheel with their eyes wide open. I’m looking for the one’s that do want to wake up. My initial post is a heartfelt nudge albeit a provocative one. I trust your intuition on this issue. You speak your truth. You obviously see the dangers! Do what you think is in your best interest and I’ll do the same. We each work in our own unique and mysterious way. My hope is that one day all of earth’s children can wake up and give peace a dance! Peace and love “You must be the change you want to see in the world” Mahatma Gandhi
Well i would say that watching tv is fun so why i would not do it... ???? Am i free if i deny anything what i want to do? Is it a good revolution if i do something what i don't want to happen... Come on there is lot of shit in tv and there are lots of people who look it too much, BUT is it so bad...????
TV, for the most part, is terrible. Even the best shows are filled with commercials. I tend either to read/play guitar or just zone out and think about something more interesting during the commercials, but I know so many people whose eyes are glued to the set more so during the commercials than the actual show! And that is just sad, and sick. Yes, there are some informative shows... but do you really think you'll learn more in an hour of watching the History Channel than in an hour of reading a good nonfiction book, or in an hour of reading about things you're interested in on Wikipedia, or a physical encyclopedia? I think almost all the time you're better off doing something else. Now, TV has some use as a news medium, and as the primary means for showing live stuff as it's happening. For instance, sports. I like watching sports, and a TV is pretty much required for this. Nothing wrong with it, in my opinion. I suppose you could argue it's a waste of time to watch football, but few things aren't a waste of time when you really break it down. As for the internet... the internet can be horribly addicting, but I think the main problem with the internet is a different one, perhaps even scarier than TV's main issue... The internet is, in a word, people. At the risk of revealing a pessimistic view of humanity, I don't think that's a great thing. Unlike with television, anyone can set up a website. 98% of what's on the internet is garbage, because it's written by some jackass who knows nothing. At least SOMEONE clears people to go on the air (although judging by what's on, the standards obviously aren't too high, but higher than the internet where there is no standard). Take Wikipedia for example... possibly the most useful website on the internet. i use it all the time. Yet, tons of that stuff is garbage - factually inaccurate, poorly written, incomplete. You have ot watch out. Now the internet is also far more useful than TV... I think it has more positives and negatives. More access to great stuff, but even more crap that can suck you in. I'm guilty of it at this very second, but I used to spend hours a day perusing messageboards for NOTHING... I guess I learned some interesting stuff sometimes, but I could've been spending my time a lot better by, say, playing guitar, writing a short story, hanging out with my loved ones... Of course a responsible person can turn on the TV every now and then. Just remember, there's a reason why it's called "the boob tube!" You use more brain power sleeping than you do watching a sitcom. Not to mention, I'm far more likely to make myself laugh by just musing about my surroundings than by watching comedy aimed at people of IQ <100.
TV is simply mental masturbation. In and of itself, masturbation is a good thing but done to excess it becomes a vice. It substitutes real life for a pointless, selfish experience of little value. The internet is far more interactive and allows the user to electively choose what to view/read/learn. I can, in a single setting, learn what plants grow well in my area, research the culture of the Incas and find out how to tune my car for the best performance. The same amount of time in front of a TV subjects me to the political bias of whatever news or programming is presented. TV will suggest that my sex life will improve by eating the right fast food crap...that I will be a more complete person if I buy_______ product. It will often give me biased views of gays or immigrants or Muslims or sell me on various idealogies. In short, it will try to influence my thinking to match that of the programmers and sponsers. It has an addictive quality to it that stifles independent thinking, dulls creativity. And for God sake, who gives a rats ass about "reality" as portrayed in various shows. Soap operas in their many manifestations are poisonious in their portrayal of the human condition. The News???..no thanks, I'll stick with my own sources. Other than that though, tv is fine.
Uh, so,. Ya commin to my Super Bowl Party ? We are serving Chilli ! Can't wait to see the advertisments! Its a little cold outside. My Garden can wait untill the equinox.
Would the Us-Them myth entail conveying some mystical power which constructs all the negative aspects you personally see on society in a little glowing box?
Lodui, Interesting question. Me think that the Us-Them myth is created when the monotheistic concept is down loaded in the unfiltered consciousness of our innocent babes. Once downloaded the subconscience filter is in place. Then it is hammered home by mom and dad and our cultural lifestyles…you know…mine-yours…give-take…possess-own...priests-police. When we get tired of dealing with our kids we sit them down in front of the little glowing box. The TV is merely the talking head of the underling conformist, competitive, consumer driven power structure! Hear it? Conform, compete, consume, breed…conform, compete, consume, breed… There is hope for those that are willing to make good choices and work hard to cultivate a healthy and happy lifestyle. Recycle the TV and know the garden! The mystical power is the power to change personal behavior. The nature in human nature is Mother Nature and the mother of nature is the garden.
this is why i can't condemn television... because i'm such a computer nut... i'm on the damn thing a lot of the time, and it doesn't matter, i'm still receiving waves of advertising, sitting on my butt, and getting few productive things done!! that's just me, however... every single person is different in every single case... i know some people that *do* only watch the discovery channel, turner classic movies, and the history channel, etcetera... unfortunately there aren't television packages that let you pick and choose. not that i know of, anyway.
