if it wasn't about athletic or other 'celebrities', 'black' or 'white', would we even be hearing about it at all? that's my question. obviously it had to have already existed and been going on for whoever it was to have gotten involved in it in the first place. so why hadn't we heard about it before someone of 'celebrity' status got caught being involved?

could it possibly that we'd rather have things to bitch about then actually prevent them from happining? could it possibly be that we're all, so damd backward headed ignorant to give a dam more about so called celebrities, then about real suffering and harm and the preventing of them?

to hell with the black and white thing: do celebrities have to get involved in everything before anyone gives a dam about anything?

and who the fucking hell is paton manning or this vic charicter either one of them anyway? this is the first i've heard of either of them. (and i probably wouldn't mind a damd bit if it were the last)

I don't agree with that perception at all - Manning has a longer history and is more high-profile than Vick (by virtue of being thrice the quarterback Vick ever could be). And he has quite the straight-edge, squeaky-clean image. Most people who knew of Vick before this knew he wasn't any kind of a candidate for sainthood. People have long said he was the biggest dope-dealer at VT during his time there.

I think there'd be as much if not more outrage. More shock, from jaded and cynical white people, which is unfortunate, but there it is.

well, you know, anyone who can ACTUALLY compare hunting to dog fighting has very little understanding of hunting AND dog fighting.

 

either that, or they've spent entirely too much time with those belly-scratching pukes who just like to go shoot stuff to make them look like they have bigger dicks or some such bs. come to think on it, they are fucking embarassing.

 

and you know, themnax, i can understand the hero-worship of athletes a good deal better than i can the paris hilton snots. you watch these people who have achieved a level of physical brilliance, combining genetics, talent and sheer hard work. a lifetime of effort to achieve and win and dominate. it resonates with us. i don't even like football, but i LOVE watching the balletic replays: it's beauty, it's power, it's an honed talent and chasing dreams and ultimately acheiving them. it's a catalyst for so many people. i can't think of how many times i stood in awe of something i didn't understand for the sheer natural beauty and power of a moment. i can understand it. these people become a catalyst, an icon, for more than just looking like a barbie doll. they're warriors, they're dancers, they're physical beauty at it's peak of power.

but then to throw in this piece of ugliness, when someone has managed to acheive a hero status that knows no race, creed or economic background, THROWN AWAY for something so immensely brutal, it matters. and no one should make any apologies for it mattering to them. it's not like that paris hilton celebrity bullshit. this is something that hit right at the heart of people looking for a good example. but he's only human. he got caught up in something cruel and nasty and purposeless. he probably didn't feel the guilt because he felt that raw power over life and death and had all those people around him of a like mind making it okay for him. guilt didn't enter into it anymore than in any other mob or bystander to a vicious crime. like they say, the more witnesses to a crime, the less culpable any one useless bystander.

i'm a hunter. one thing that a lot of people don't understand about hunting is that feeling of regret and gratitude can be so completely felt at the same time. the respect mingled with a need to kill something glorious for your own needs and facing the predator that is in you, so that you never ever forget what it costs you to keep living. everything we do kills animals, hunters of the old school (not trophy hunters) never lose sight of it by purchasing it in little plastic packages.

i do wish people could understand what you are saying.
i think there are too many of us to be able, other then to not eat any at all, not to purchase dead flesh in those little styro packages.
