Where did I say that animals are more important than humans? To be quite honest, I think they are equally important. Sometimes we forget that we are not that far separated from animals...simply because we are "more intelligent"? There are animals out there that have other highly developed senses that we do not have. I think we are no better, nor any worse than animals. They have every right to life on this earth as we do...and someone needs to stick up for their rights, because they cannot speak for themselves. And I don't know what college has to do with my beliefs about animals and humans.... Because computer access is really hard to get out in forests...and being in college and having to take online classes sometimes, makes it increasingly difficult...I probably will do some tree sits and things like that once I graduate...so one day I probably will live in the forest. I didn't know I was whining. Can you quote something that seemed like I was whining? I think you can only really tell whining by the tone of one's voice...and since I'm typing, I don't really have a tone. I'm not a hippie...I don't live in a hippie area of amerika. If you think I'm a yuppie or if you think I'm a hippie, that just shows how closed minded you are...labelling people is pretty lame. But suit yourself.
Well, it's quite obvious by some of the replies on this thread that you have no idea about environmental issues...so do I know more about the issue than you do? Probably. Do I know more than you in general...probably not. That's the difference.
Animals aren't just loveable, they are an important aspect of our environment in which I will get to later It's not just saving the animals when I think of environmental issues, it's a plethora of other things including human health. Actually, everything in nature is connected. Without animals, there would be no humans...for instance...worms...as insignificant as you think worms might be they are, they are decomposers, without them we would not have fertile soil to grow our food. Not only that, but they also help decompose some of our trash. We'd be swimming in trash if it wasn't for worms. And if there were no worms, there would be no birds. Birds spread pollen, which allows for some plants to reproduce/grow, without some of these plants, humans wouldn't have an important source of energy. A lot of biodiversity on the earth means that it is healthy. We can also think of it in an ethical point of view, animals have every right to live just like humans do... There are many ways that animals play an active role in our environment. Think outside of the box. A lot of assuming there, huh? Because the environment belongs to EVERY creature, not just humans! I hate the fact that people think they can OWN mother nature and exploit it. and if lions did that, I'd feel good about it, not inferior. That means caring and sensitivity.
That seperates us by quite a bit, imo, actually. Animals' rights? How can most animals realise the concept of having rights when they don't even recognise sadness. Don't get me wrong, I love animals, but if they were really so special then why didn't many of them "conquer" civilisation instead of only humans who did so? If it weren't for companies like the one Brad works with you wouldn't have a computer. You are no less addicted to oil than the rest of us... should you really be trying to bite the hand that feeds you while you are dependent on that hand? Every single post? You can whine without speaking. It happens every day in these forums. I think I will.
I have a pretty good grasp on quite a few environmental issues. I just realise that arguing about them is in the end pointless, as I'm sure we past the "point of no return" concerning global warning and whatever will happen is going to happen. Bring on the ice age!
How? How do you know they don't recognize sadness? Do you have a pet? Can you tell when they are sad...like if you don't give them a treat, or how about if you hit him, he runs away with his tail between his legs. Do you think chimps that are locked in cages don't feel sad...they want to be outside of that cage and roam free...just like people in jail. Chimps are very close to humans in their feelings and emotions. Maybe it just hasn't happened yet. *shrugs* who knows what could happen in the future. Am I dependent on oil? Sure, we all are...but I make an attempt to not use it when I don't have to. My home, thanks to my parents, is partly powered by solar panels, which helps. I also don't drive when I don't have to...I walk or ride my bike. I am a vegetarian...which cuts down on a lot of fossil fuels, as well. One day I hope to completely cut out my dependence on oil...but it's a process, just like anything in life. I certainly don't claim perfection, but I try to do my part, which is more than I can say about most of amerika. I like specifics... Good Because opinions are important to express...luckily I don't give a fuck what you or anyone else thinks about me
i know ... ... i never considered humans more important then animals in my whole life... i actually find us quite dumb when we do. yeh, i dont deny it. i was just showing the similarity between them and humans. agreed, I apologize . cool. that is all. but just keep an open mind on people's thoughts *Everybody's*... thats the only reason i decided to barge in to this thread. You have well constructed thoughts, and you're for something worthwhile. that is good.
But it will be people like stebo, who doesn't think global warming exists that will whine and complain that people in the environmental field didn't warn him or do something before we got in too deep. I see it in politics all the time. So maybe it's pointless to argue...but maybe someone out there is reading this, especially some young people and saying, "Hey, maybe she has a point"...somewhere along the way... Education is key. If you don't know there is a problem...you can't change it...therefore, if I want changes, I have to do what I can and educate people in the process.
...because we're intelligent. Intelligent humans (mostly) make it to the top of the power structure, are they not seperated from the "non-intelligent" humans? I always wanted to believe that dogs were more than what many scientists have said... but in the last two years, two of my dogs have had puppies. The first one, we kept three, but the mother was shot by crazy neighbours. Her children and the other dogs never seemed to act any differently when she didn't come back to play with them. and then one of the three puppies we kept was hit by a car. ah fuck that was sad, but the other dogs never seemed to think so. then with this last one who just had puppies, we gave all 10 of them away, and the mother has seemed to just have forgotten about them. cats seem to be the same, same with cows and goats. these are all i have experience with though Planet of the Apes. :sunglasse It really doesn't matter what you do, though. All of that stuff (foods, plastics, cars) are still being produced whether you use them or not. One day I hope to completely cut out my dependence on oil...but it's a process, just like anything in life. I certainly don't claim perfection, but I try to do my part, which is more than I can say about most of amerika. Fine. Softwood certainly grows faster than hardwoods (which cedar is)...and luckily I use recycled notebook paper and I VERY rarely print anything out...I take notes (it helps me remember things better). I know what I stand for...you obviously don't stand for a damn thing. The problem is...the hardwoods, like cedars, grow much slower than softwoods, like pine. It will take hundreds, sometimes thousands of years for the tree to REALLY be replaced (as in size). Some of these larger trees are homes to certain animals that live ONLY in that size tree...when you cut them down...where are they to go? Pine is a softwood, it grows much faster...Cedars take a very long time to grow. Therefore, the habitat is replaced more quickly. Why do we have the right to use natural resources? Simply because we CAN? That seems silly to me. Mother Earth doesn't belong to us. What is on this earth doesn't belong to humans. It belongs to every creature on the planet. More so to the ones that live within the trees, the lakes, the rivers. Who are we, most of us city people, to go into these creature's habitats and take them as our own? Are you THAT selfish? Are WE that selfish? I stand for environmentalism because it's important to. Someone has to...it's obvious you don't. I recycle, I bike places or walk places, I respect Mother Earth...and honor her when I get a chance. I don't destroy her by cutting down trees. I don't think I'm a hypocrite at all...I think you are severely misguided and you have that ignorant male testosterone that seems to be a disease in our society. Fucking sick-o. That all sounded like whining to me... I really wish I had something better to do...ahahaha.
But at the point we are now, I doubt education will really do anything but make a bit more people a bit more frightened of the future. There is really nothing to do but sit back and enjoy our type of life while we can. I hope it doesn't happen but the science is there.
NO, they aren't. At least not in my book I've always had animals in my life...and I always saw their pain and suffering...their happiness and sadness...I guess it's all how we perceive things. If you don't think they have feelings then you'll never see it. Actually, if more people stopped buying it...they'd have to stop producing it. No buyers means no demand...therefore, no supply. You might think that one person can't make a difference, but many can...and I know a lot of people that feel the same as me. I guess I don't know how that's whining...hmmm...you must have never had a girlfriend, huh? LOL
Maybe you want to surrender to it, but I don't... I've never been much of a quitter, really. I believe there's ALWAYS something that can be done to prevent things from happening...and if you don't try...then you never know.
Yes, because there have been oh so many dumbasses controlling the country, eh? Even on local government levels its the intelligent in charge. If they had feelings all of my dogs would always be mourning and sad. But as of right now that stuff is still being produced like never before. Notsomuch quitting as it is trying to live life to the fullest.
I believe we are all put on this earth for a reason, so I'm not going to waste my time here... Not to mention the fact that I want my children and grandchildren to have a better life than I did...and be able to see some of our natural world...the same as I did.
Coming from a chick who clearly has no idea about logging in BC. Or logging in general, considering you don't seem to know that Cedar is a softwood. Not that I am logging in BC. I'm surveying in BC, where we cut lines a metre wide. It is hardly the wholesale destruction of forests you seem to fear so much. In fact, in all the places I've lived in BC, I've only seen one instance of the huge swathes of clearcuts you seem to fear so much - on Vancouver Island. But hey, change starts close to home. For the record - BC has over three times the protected forests of Michigan (as well a metric shitload more unprotected forest). We have significantly less than half the people. Maybe you should go write your governor or whatever it is you one-dimensional hippies do.
