I really hope that the Julie Andrews voice of Shary Bobbins pronounced clerk properly! On the other hand, we don't actually use clerk to mean shop keeper, a clerk works in an office.
I'm not saying it's not wrong, I'm saying that maybe the best option isn't to point out every single mistake all the time, like you recommended. It annoys me when people are too lazy to use language correctly, but I was backing up Mercy's point that not everyone can help the fact that they don't communicate as well as others might.
Excuse me, but I was not talking about myself there. Not being funny, but good luck finding mistakes in my posts. I don't need this free "education" you talk about, thank you very much, I think I can manage perfectly well without.
yes, I was being ironic there. you will notice that Americans have a bad habit of using adjectives as adverbs, real, good, fast, quick, etc. And of course in England we have the good old song "if you can't talk proper shut your mouth" which is sung at football matches to any fans with a different accent from yours.
How is it a bad habit if that is the way we use words in American English? We also punctuate differently. But don't worry, by the time I come to the U.K. I hope to be able to speak what you call proper English.
well, standard american, accents, spellings, and stuff, that's just the dialect. However grammatical errors that have become common just because no-one's bothered to sit up and take notice are bad habits.
That makes about as much sense to me as the old testament in the original hebrew. No-one buys papers if they've got grammatical errors all over them. Counted off points? What does that mean anyway?
In English class, you write book reports and any grammatical errors, such as run-on sentences, are counted off. For example a paper has 100 possible points. If a run-on sentence is -2 and the paper has 5 of them, your grade would be 90.
oh so you were just trying to say you lose marks for poor spelling, punctuation and grammar. Why didn't you just say so? Counting off seems an illogical phrase to me. You can't count on or off, you count up and down, unless you're talking about counting on your fingers. We say you get 'marked down' 90 percent? Doesn't that imply an otherwise perfect piece of work? In my experience it's impossible to get more than about 70% for an essay, they'll always find something wrong with it. They have to, because they can't give high marks out in case someone writes a better essay.
Yep, so watch it Ignorance is no excuse - you should be taking pride in your spelling and grammar whether you get marks for it or not, anyway! Just a quick reminder by the way DEFINITELY
